About TASCA York
TASCA York is a Portuguese restaurant at 28 Colliergate in York, serving coffee and pastéis de nata through the morning before the day moves on to Iberian small plates. The croquettes change daily, with fillings that have included chicken and mushroom and ham and cheese. Piri piri chicken is on the small plates menu, and the drinks list pairs Iberian wines with a Port selection to drink alongside the food. The menu and the decor both take their inspiration from Lisbon. A lunchtime tapas deal runs for those stopping in midday. The restaurant opens Tuesday to Saturday and closes on Sundays and Mondays.

Customer Review Summary
Piri piri chicken is the dish reviewers raise most, described as tender and moist, with charred skin and plenty of flavour. Close behind is the Goan chicken curry, called fantastic, with juicy chicken. Diners also single out the gambas prawns, the croquettes of the day (chicken and mushroom, or ham and cheese), the halloumi, and an 18oz ribeye said to be like butter. Desserts earn repeated mentions, including the orange almond cake and the Basque cheesecake, and the pastel de nata is called to die for. Staff are described as friendly, chatty and welcoming. The main criticism comes from one lunch reviewer who found the meal costly for what arrived. In that account the chargrilled steak had no char and was lukewarm, the gambas sauce tasted more of lemon than garlic and chilli, and the padron peppers could have been crisper and saltier. A couple of reviewers suggest booking, one noting people turned away on a Thursday. One diner who couldn't handle the spice was given a glass of milk on the house.

“3 friends reserved for evening dinner. The food all tasted fresh and very tasty. Really nice ambience, speedy service and special shout out to the waiters and waitresses who were very friendly, attentive and even provided recommendations where to go out in York afterwards. Would visit again! Dish highlights - Gambas Prawns, Chicken Thighs, Goan Chicken Curry, Halloumi, Olives, tomato salad and spicy rice! The desert special was also delicious! orange almond cake I believe.”

“Lovely independent restaurant in the city centre, highlights included the special croquettes which were ham and cheese during our visit, the halloumi and the piri piri chicken! Great service and friendly atmosphere, I’d recommend booking as we went on Thursday and still saw lots of people being turned away!”

“Excellent Portuguese tapas! Went in on a quiet weekday with my partner as we really fancied some tapas. The steak was cooked perfectly and was very tender paired with a lovely chimichuri sauce. The Goan Curry was fantastic as well with tender and juicy chicken along with bread. Our desert of the Basco cheesecake was absolutely incredible, one of the best I ever had. I will be returning for sure.”

“It was around 4pm when we got here so easy to get a seat, although I would recommend reserving a table. We had the Tomato Bread, Croquettes of the day (Chicken and Mushroom, and awesome), some fries, the Chourico, and a chicken goan curry. All were very nice. With service charge on top it came to a few pence over £50. The service was great, my friend couldn't handle the spice and was given a glass of milk on the house. I would highly recommend this place to anyone who likes food with flavour.”

“My partner and I booked this restaurant as part of our weekend in York, and we definitely weren’t disappointed! Starting with the lovely warm welcome we received, we ordered a total of nine dishes, three of them being dessert. I could go through everything we ate and say how delicious it was, but the Piri Piri Chicken and the Orange Cake were particular highlights for us. From the service to the food to the whole experience, we would 100% recommend trying this place. Hopefully, one day we will get the chance to experience it again. 10/10!”
