About Black Wheat Club
Baking runs through the kitchen at Black Wheat Club, a restaurant and wine bar on Fossgate in York, where the bread, including the sourdough, is made in house. That sourdough carries the spiced lamb sausage bun, one of around 74 dishes across a menu that also runs to goats cheese poached eggs with whipped goats cheese, marinated pears and house-made pickles, and bacon and eggs on sourdough. A mushroom bun sits on the breakfast menu as the vegan choice, alongside vegetarian options. The kitchen serves brunch and dinner, with wine poured through both and coffee finished with latte art. It is a small venue that fills up, and there can be a short wait outside for a table, though booking is possible. A private dining room takes larger groups, and dogs are welcome. The doors open Monday to Sunday, with Tuesdays closed.

Customer Review Summary
Brunch is the clear draw, and the goats cheese poached eggs is the dish reviewers name most, described with whipped goats cheese, marinated pears, house made pickles and a slice of the in house sourdough that several say makes the plate. Close behind, the bread itself: one guest calls the bacon and eggs on sourdough among the best breakfast dishes they have had, and another reports their son rating the sausage bap his best ever. Also singled out are the spiced lamb sausage bun, the porridge, the mushroom bun praised by a vegan diner who says no compromise was needed, and the heritage carrots at a birthday dinner. The coffee draws repeated mention, including latte art noticed by a barista. Reviewers describe a small venue that fills up, with two noting a short wait outside or a lucky walk in on a busy morning, and one calling it slightly more expensive than usual while still rating the quality highly. Staff are repeatedly described as friendly and attentive.

“The best brunch I've had in a very long time! Every mouthful was perfect and it was clear an enormous amount of thought had gone into the flavours on the plate. I had the Goats cheese poached eggs...whipped goats cheese, perfectly poached eggs, marinated pears, dressed salad leaves, home made pickles, sitting on a slice of their home made sourdough. Honestly, I couldn't fault it. My husband had the spiced lamb sausage bun, which was also amazing. We had their porridge yesterday which was also on another level. I could eat here every day and it's certainly a place to watch...they deserve to achieve even greater things in the future, and I look forward to following them.”

“Came to York for 3 night city break and the morning we were heading home, my partner and I went for breakfast here before we left. Not just the best breakfast we had here but one of the best breakfast we have ever had! …”

“I was visiting York with my girlfriend and was looking for a nice breakfast/ brunch spot for my birthday and we stumbled upon the Black Wheat Club. It is only a small venue and was full inside but we only had to wait outside for <5 mins until we were seated. I loved the menu layout, if you wanted to add extra sides it was all available and the menu was curated thoughtfully. As a chef myself it is nice to see a breakfast place that takes care of its ingredients and processes, I even noticed they have in house pickles (which I assume they were using on the menu). I myself went for the goats cheese poached eggs, and my girlfriend has the smoked salmon version, both were amazing and the fresh bread baked in house made the dish. We also ordered a couple of extra sides, and even though the restaurant was busy the service was great, and the standard of food was top tier. One of the best breakfasts I have had for a long time. Thanks for a great meal, if I am back in York I will visit again.”

“Visited for dinner as a first experience. Lovely meal with interesting flavour combinations and great wine. Service was friendly and professional. Buzzing atmosphere. Everything a bistro should be and we'll definitely be back - would love to try brunch too.”
