About The Tavern
The Tavern is a pub on Upton Ln in Widnes, with kangaroo steak on a menu that also covers a three-course option. On quiz night, any steak ordered comes with a free starter and dessert, so the pub quiz doubles as a dinner deal. Salt and Pepper Chicken is served as a starter. The lunch menu adds homemade soups and a warm scone for dessert, and a "2 Dine" lunch deal runs alongside it. Live music plays on some evenings. Function rooms and a separate seated area cater to large family groups and parties. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often single out the steak deal, where ordering any steak brings a free starter and dessert, and one diner describes the kangaroo steak as delicious. Close behind are the three course menus and the Salt and Pepper Chicken starter, with rump steak and chips, the Biscoff cookie dough, home made soups, a warm scone and a cheesecake one diner calls the nicest they have tasted. Several praise friendly, attentive staff, and large family and birthday groups describe being seated in their own area with regular check-ins. Live music and the quiz night add to the atmosphere for some. The main complaint comes from a group of over 20 who ordered afternoon tea: they found the food sparse for the asking price and the service of it very poor, though an urn of tea and coffee was provided. The same reviewer also says the Salt and Pepper Chicken portion was small, while other dishes from the menu were better. One returning diner says the food improved after the change of ownership, and another booked Sunday lunch after a first visit.

“So we recently had an occasion here for over 20 over people they were very accomedating room was ok. Staff were good too. Service was ok. I've given a low rating due to the lack of food that was presented to a large group. Over 20 guest ordered afternoon tea & the selection of food wasn't worth the asking price of £14. They did provide an urn for tea & coffee but the service of afternoon tea food was very poor I would not recommend at all. A few guest ordered other meals from the menu & I will say they were much better and worth the price the Salt & pepper chicken portion is very low could do with more chicken pieces but other items of food very lovely. Such a shame to right this review as previously mentioned the venue is clean & tidy staff were ok. I wish i could be putting a better review.”

“My son celebrated his 40th birthday at The Tavern. It was a family meal, we are a large family. Seated in our own area, plenty of room and privacy. Despite there being so many of us, the service was excellent. It was a busy Saturday evening and staff were amazing. Nothing was too much trouble, checking on us regularly. Food was lovely, hot and well presented. Very happy with his choice, would definitely reccomend.”

“I absolutely love The Tavern. I've never been disappointed with the food. Its obviously freshly cooked with great ingredients. The staff are so friendly and knowledgeable about the food. Special shout out to Natalie and Carl who provide outstanding service and are so friendly and take time to have a chat and make you smile, just wonderful. Thank you.”

“Returned to the Tavern for the first time since the change of ownership. You are always worried that standards may have dropped. Quite the opposite the already good standard of food has improved. Value for the three course options is superb especially if you are a steak lover. Good wine list and full range of other drinks. Brilliant service and we will be back soon”
