About Trenchers Whitley Bay
Trenchers Whitley Bay is a fish and chip restaurant on Spanish City Plaza in Whitley Bay, set directly under the dome of the restored former Spanish City amusement park building. It carries over the fish and chip cooking of Trenchers of Whitby, which has run for 40 years. The fish is fried in beef dripping and comes in regular and large sizes. For other diets, the menu includes vegan fish and chips and gluten free options, and special menus are offered. Desserts include raspberry cheesecake and almond tart, and coffee and hot chocolate are served. A grand piano is played live on selected evenings, so diners eat under the dome with music in the room. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary
Fish and chips is the centre of most visits, and reviewers split on how it lands. Fans describe lovely, flaky fish, a vegan fish and chips called outstanding, and a large fish that was delicious. Others note gluten free options and chips fried in beef dripping. Desserts and drinks draw praise too, including a raspberry cheesecake with ice cream and a warm almond tart alongside coffee and hot chocolate. Reviewers also describe a beautifully restored building, a pianist on some evenings, and friendly staff, with several crediting individual servers for their service. The complaints are specific and come mostly from people who know the Whitby restaurant. A few found the fish disappointing: bland, small for a regular order, or wafer thin and overcooked. One table received chips instead of salad and garden peas instead of mushy, then had to seek out staff for drinks and for the bill in a room that was not busy. One reviewer said they had eaten thicker fish in a fishcake.

“I spent my Sunday afternoon in Trenchers Whitley Bay, and what a wonderful experience it was! The server Flynn gave me and my dining partners a lovely service and our afternoon was full of witty jokes that I encourage you to ask him to retell if you find yourself being served by him. Was quite shocked at the social skills he had for a young person- very pleasantly surprised! The fish was lovely and flaky, it was really quite delicious. When I'm next in the area I'll be going straight back. Atmosphere was lush- enough chatter it didn't feel awkward but not so loud that you couldn't hear people speak. Lovely food, lovely service, lovely place to eat- get yourself down!”

“Location is great and outside seating area reasonably clean. Fish and chips ordered, chips were ok ish, had worse but the fish was wafer thin and over cooked, I've had thicker in a fishcake. I've visited Trenchers in Whitby many times and never been disappointed with any meals purchased.”

“I ate here twice, once takeaway and once in the restaurant. Both were great. They have many options like gluten free and its all fried in beef dripping. The music is good too when the piano isn't playing. The staff were very good especially the guy with dark brown hair.”

“Food looked lovely but was a little dissapointed as the fish and chips tasted bland The place itself was lovely and staff excellent”

“The style and presentation of the place is lovely; very much on the more classical style of dining, complete with pianist (Friday evening visit)… However, as frequent visitors of the Whitby Trenchers (which is excellent on every front), we felt really disappointed by both the food and service. Service: our order was taken wrong or plated up incorrectly; chips instead of salad and garden peas instead of mushy. The food itself was very uninspiring visually - flat, thin fish (was supposed to be regular not small but looked small). Dull accompaniments - Whitby Trenches always looks mouthwatering, crispy batter, plump fish, tartare sauce in lovely white bowl as standard, rainbow salads… Whereas this plateful looked very plain and uninspiring. It tasted okay but again the fish was really thin and small for a regular. Finally, there were several times we had to seek out service: when we first arrived, no queue yet we were left standing around for quite a while. We had to ask for more drinks - one person fleetingly did a table check when we were mid mouthful. We , declined deserts but were then asked the same question again (by the same person) 5 minutes later… Getting someone to process our bill was tricky, as we literally couldn’t catch anyone’s attention. The staff seemed to be whizzing about but without paying any real attention, we felt very much like we were of no importance and the place definitely wasn’t that busy. Again Whitby Trenchers is literally always heaving, yet every time, no matter who served us - it’s the same consistency- great food and happy, friendly and personalised service. There was nothing major but we expected so much more. We are unlikely to visit Whitley Bay Trenchers again, we would try one of the other local places for fish and chips in future there. Shame 😳”

Highlights
“Following 40 years of traditional Fish & Chips at Trenchers of Whitby, winner of the UK’s Best Fish & Chip Restaurant for 2019 as part of the National Fish and Chip Awards, we are proud to bring this institution to Whitley Bay. Offering friendly service with a smile, Trenchers is a place the whole family will love. The restaurant notably enjoys a special spot directly underneath the dome, with a pianist playing on selected days. Every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday evening, our spectacular pianist, Mike Waller, will be playing on the grand piano from 6pm. We are proud to announce that Trenchers, Spanish City is officially the Best Fish and Chip Restaurant in the UK as part of the 2020 National Fish and Chip Awards.”
