About The Gibraltar Rock Tynemouth

The Gibraltar Rock Tynemouth is a clifftop pub and restaurant on East St in North Shields, open daily. Its upstairs restaurant has tables with a sea view over King Edward's Bay and the Priory. The upstairs menu centres on seafood and grilled dishes, including Fish Pie and Roast Cod, and a separate vegan menu gives plant-based diners their own choices. Downstairs, the bar serves pub favourites from breakfast through to dinner, alongside ales, cocktails and light bites. Sunday roast comes with a three-meats upgrade option. The Push The Button Happy Hour runs every day at the bar, and live music plays on Friday and Saturday.

Customer Review Summary

Bottomless brunch is what reviewers raise most, and it splits them. One diner calls the drinks plentiful with a view of the sea, and credits a server who kept the drinks coming. Two others report only four drinks across the 90 minutes, having to flag staff down for the last ones, with one describing waits after being told someone would be right back and feeling like an inconvenience. Food is described as tasty but on the smaller side. Beyond brunch, diners praise the Salmon and Grapefruit Salad, Roast Cod, Fish Pie, Fishcakes and Seabass, and one calls the fries the best they have had in a pub. Sunday lunch earns praise for choice and quality, though one reviewer found the meat portions meagre even after paying extra for the three meats upgrade. A separate vegan menu pleasantly surprised one party, and several describe friendly staff and a view over the bay. One diner arriving just after 4pm found the menu had not changed as expected. One brunch reviewer who sent feedback by email says no one replied or apologised.

“We booked bottomless brunch via Wowcher. We weren’t sure what to expect but it was amazing. The food was delicious, the drinks were plentiful and the view of the sea made it even better! Thomas our server was amazing, so friendly, really on it with the drinks and even found me some tape to try fix my dress! Highly recommend!”

“Great views, food was nice, but the drink service was terrible. The concept of a bottomless brunch appears to be a little lost on them. Food came very quickly, but we had no drinks and not even any water left and no one came around to ask if we wanted more. We only had 4 drinks each the whole 90 minutes, and that was only because we were constantly trying to flag someone down to ask to order more. Not sure if they were understaffed, but it wasn’t even full when we were there, so I dread to think what the service would have been like had it have been full. Every time we tried to get a member of staffs attention we were told they would be right back and 10 minutes later we would still be waiting. Every time we did get someone’s attention, we were also made to feel like an inconvenience, but if we didn’t ask for drinks, we’d have sat with empty glasses for the majority of the 90 minutes. It’s a shame because it was a lovely place but I wouldn’t return or recommend to anyone else due to the service. The only positive is we had a Wowcher deal so hadn’t paid full price, which may be why they weren’t fussed on providing a great experience. However if that’s the case, why put vouchers out in the first place. I was sent an email a couple of days later to request feedback, which I provided and never got a response to address or apologise for the poor service, which is even more disappointing than the experience itself.”

“Great venue. Accommodated last minute table change. Food was tasty, portion size was on the smaller side. Only got 4 drinks during our 90 minutes on the bottomless brunch and had to ask for the last 3. Overall this was value for money but service has been better/ more frequent during other brunches I've done.”

“Great pub in a perfect location. It on top of the cliff overlooking the bay. Loads of seating and they make the best fries I have ever got in a pub. Crispy and ..well amazing. This place will be especially amazing in summer and being able to sit outside in the sun with a drink.”
