About Longsands Fish Kitchen

Longsands Fish Kitchen is a fish and chips takeaway in North Shields on Front St, where a board shows who caught the fish and where, so you can see the source of what is on the plate. The fish and chips come with haddock or cod, and a small cod portion is also available. Mushy peas are served alongside, and the fish comes with curry sauce and homemade tartare sauce. The menu also lists a cod and prawn combo, and sticky toffee pudding is the dessert. Vegetarian and gluten free options are marked on the menu. The kitchen is open every day except Tuesdays. Tables can involve a queue, and the team sends a text when one is ready.

Customer Review Summary

Fish and chips is the draw, with reviewers praising haddock and cod in a light, crispy batter, moist flaky fish and thick chips, often with curry sauce and mushy peas alongside. Close behind are the tiger prawns with chili jam, the cod and prawn combo and the squid, while the pineapple fritters and sticky coffee pudding also earn mentions. Portions are called generous, staff are described as friendly, and the dining area and toilets are noted as clean. The criticism is specific. One diner found a small cod dry and overcooked, with chewy batter, black bits on the chips and a cold plate, and felt the price was hard to defend without beef dripping. Another found dark, pasty batter, thin cod and dried out chips, and left half the meal. Queues and limited seating come up, and a couple of reviewers mention booking or grabbing a takeaway. One diner liked the board naming who caught the fish and where, and another was texted when a table was ready.

“Heard a lot about this places always big queues outside but I was disappointed the food wasn't up to my standard the fish bit had dark batter which at first I thought it was over cooked but it seemed pastey inside also the cod bits were thin and lacked taste. The chips seemed they had dried out with a usual taste that might of been the make of potato overall I was disappointed left half my meal. Just a footnote why don't you let people put there own salt and vinegar on just chips need salt as your hard working servers don't have time”

“It’s a great place for family dining. Staff is so friendly, food is so fresh and big portion. Fish is like just catch from the sea☺️, king prawns are big and fresh. It’s reasonable price. Kid meal is big and fresh cook.”

“One of the best fish and chips spots in Tynemouth! The service is friendly and efficient, perfect for a quick meal. While the restaurant is clean and conveniently close to the beach, seating is limited, there are only a couple of outdoor tables, and the indoor area often has a long queue. The price is reasonable also. Your best bet? Grab a takeaway and enjoy it by the water!”

“My wife and I recently visited Long Sands Fish Kitchen and thoroughly enjoyed our meal. I had the haddock, chips and mushy peas, while my wife had the small cod and chips. The fish was cooked perfectly with a light, thin, crispy batter, and the fish itself was moist, flaky and full of flavour. Portions were generous, and the slice of lemon was a nice touch. The seating area was comfortable, the service was excellent, and everything was clean and well presented, including the toilets. Overall, a fantastic fish and chip experience. We really enjoyed it and wouldn't hesitate to return. Top marks!”

“Forgot about how many times having their Cod and Prawn Combo, its so good and so far the best in UK. Best time to visit is around 3pm, not much people around. They have their dine-in restaurant just next to them, same quality.”
