About The Garden Room Bar & Restaurant at Sneaton Castle
The Garden Room Bar & Restaurant at Sneaton Castle is a restaurant in Whitby, set on the Sneaton Castle Estate, where the Sisters of the Holy Paraclete lived for over 100 years. The dining space is a castle-style hall with carved decor, and sculptures stand in the grounds. The Sunday roast comes with beef from the estate's own cattle, which graze on the grounds, and lamb is the other meat option. Each plate arrives with a large Yorkshire pudding and gravy. Vegetarians can order a chestnut roast with its own veggie gravy. The restaurant opens all day, every day, and the estate also holds a bar and bedrooms alongside the restaurant. Diners who leave a tip on a card payment should note that the machine has no tip option, so cash is needed.

Customer Review Summary
Sunday roast is the centre of the praise here, with reviewers calling it the best Sunday dinner or lunch they have had, built around roast beef from cattle reared on the estate, served with a massive Yorkshire and lashings of rich gravy. Lamb and a vegetarian chestnut roast with its own gravy also get mentions, and portions are described as huge, with kids' plates just as generous. Close behind is the setting: the castle entrance, the grounds, the carvings and the lit-up architecture. Outside the roast, diners name the flat iron steak with blue cheese sauce, duck breast, rack of lamb, Whitby crab arancini, wood pigeon, and inventive mocktails, and one notes the fish goujons were massive. Staff are called warm, friendly and attentive, and one couple had a rescue dog seated in a quiet corner at their request. The one practical gripe is that the card machine offers no tipping option, so one reviewer wished they had brought cash, and several suggest booking ahead. One diner who skipped dessert still left wanting to return.

“What an incredible Sunday lunch! Beautiful fresh food, huge portions and the Vegetarian option was delicious. It’s such a gorgeous building too, we really felt this was one of the prettiest places around Whitby to eat and drink. We will most definitely be back.”

“We visited today on the recommendation of the hosts at our nearby lodge, and honestly it might be the best tip we've ever been given. Where do I even start. The grounds are stunning, the views of the surrounding area are incredible, and the building itself is genuinely beautiful. The restaurant inside matches it perfectly — proper character, lovely atmosphere, and even the bathrooms were a highlight. Quirky, old-fashioned, and brilliantly done. The staff were warm and welcoming from the moment we walked in. Nothing was too much trouble. That genuine, unpretentious hospitality that you can't fake. Now the food. I'll just say it — the best Sunday dinner I've ever had. I had the lamb, my wife had the beef. I tried hers and I'd have been happy with either. I'd read a note saying they rear their own cattle on the estate — you can absolutely taste the difference. Normally when the food is this good the portions are tiny and there's a whiff of pretension about the place. Not here. I can eat, and this almost defeated me. The kids' portions were equally generous and they loved theirs. I'm not a dessert person — always say no — but the wife and kids made me try theirs. Spot on again. One thing worth knowing before you go: there's no option to add a tip through the card machine at the end of your meal, unlike most places. The staff here genuinely deserve one, so do yourself a favour and bring some cash so you can leave something. I didn't have any on me and it's still bothering me. They were that good. Can't recommend it highly enough. We'll be back”

“The entrance to the castle is stunning with views of the architecture and countryside, then the whole experience offers a wow factor with carvings and decor becoming of the castle. Good selection of drinks and great food menu. The flat iron steak was cooked to perfection, melt in the mouth and a blue cheese sauce added a compliment to the meal, the fish gougons where massive so no need for the fish and chips. Well priced for the classy venue.”
