Quick info
About Abbey Wharf
Abbey Wharf is a fish and seafood restaurant on Market Pl in Whitby, open daily and laid out over two floors. The menu pairs seafood with land dishes, from fishcakes and Craven cod to steaks, and the bar adds cocktails and wine. A self-pay machine with several draft beers gives drinkers a way to pay without queuing at the counter. Guests can order at the bar or through an app, and table service is also available. Upstairs seating opens up when the downstairs fills. Dogs are allowed, and the restaurant looks out over the harbour.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often single out the harbour view and terrace, and the food draws praise for specific dishes: the Craven cod, the monkfish, the whitebait, the fishcakes and a fillet steak cooked medium as asked. One reviewer also liked the salmon, and the burgers went down well with the boys. Service is described as good and efficient, with bar and table ordering, and one reviewer says the food arrived within minutes despite an app estimate of 40 minutes. The main complaints are about execution. One diner's calamari arrived freezing cold, and the replacement still had skin on it and was chewy. Another found the white fish a little overdone, and two mention disappointing chips. A returning visitor says it has become scruffy and noisy, with service now mostly through the bar or an app. Another reviewer dislikes being seated near dogs. Several note it gets busy, with upstairs seating available.

“Place was busy when we arrived but managed to get a table. Ordered food at the bar (fishcakes and chowder, calamari and fishcakes bites). Even though it was busy the food didn't take long to arrive. All 4 of us said their meal was excellent. My fishcakes were really tasty. The bill including drinks was quite reasonable. Really good restaurant to eat but be aware it can get busy but does have upstairs seating if needed. Would happily go there again.”

“This was my first time here. We tried ordering from the menu, but unfortunately, there were no pictures. We ordered a pie and a drink each. For me, the pie was okay, but a little too rich. The view outside of the restaurant was beautiful, overlooking the sea. Inside, there was plenty of seating. The service was average for me. Overall, it's a good place to come for a beer and some chips.”

“Lovely fresh fish and chips, great view of the harbour. We waited about 5-10 mins after ordering for food to arrive (even though the app estimated 40 mins). Kids and parents all very happy!”

“I'm obviously only going to talk about my own experience here but I decided against fish and chips and went for calamari as it was fresh, hand sliced and freshly battered. however what arrived was a freezing cold calamari with chips and a sauce. First Bite was less than probably 20° it felt like it been out for hours I asked for it to be changed over and they said they would make it fresh for me. second time it came there was still skin on the calamari so not only did I have some sort of chewy rubber band experience but also had to Peel the skin off the calamari as well which wasn't great overall, it was a solid 1 out of 10.”

“Been to Whitby many times & always came to the Abbey Wharf but never for food, just drinks on their lovely drinking terrace over the harbour. But we'd heard good things about the food & didn't fancy fish n chips; we love our steaks & decided to try theirs. We were not disappointed, we went for the most expensive steak, the fillet cut at £35 each, done just as we like it, medium. The steak came with the usual sides of chips, mushrooms, tomatoes, & salad garnish. For some reason they wouldn't let us swap out the mushrooms & tomatoes that my boyfriend doesn't like for some peas but not a big deal, we got halloumi, homemade coleslaw, & blue cheese sauce on the side & that was plenty. Everything tasted great, the steaks cooked to perfection. The atmosphere was alright, very much like a pub/bar atmosphere, they allow dogs which I agree with during the day if people are just coming for a casual drink but when I've just paid nearly £100 quid for food, maybe sit me in a part of the restaurant where dogs are not allowed. Overall, highly recommended for the quality of the food alone, just a bit more effort could be put into the decor, atmosphere, etc. The service was good & efficient from the bar staff & table servers.”
