  “Usually use riverside fisheries but having seen some good reviews though we would give railway a go. What a big mistake. Took batter off to find hardly any fish and the bit that was there was very dry. I would go as far as to say Worst fish and chips we've had in whitby. Riverside next week Feel ripped off.”

  “Staying nearby and saw some good reviews so thought we would try it. Very fresh fish with light crispy batter. Huge portions of chips (far too many… also new potatoes - never as fluffy as later in the season but delicious nonetheless.) Cooked to order - friendly and efficient staff. Thanks!”

  “Staying in Whitby for a couple of days. This chippy just round the corner from where Staying. Saw the good reviews so thought I would try it. Did not disappoint. The fish and chips where excellent. £10 for a decent size cod & chips is a bargain nowadays. Traditional old style run chip shop. Well worth a visit if in the area. Cash payment only but the meals are not expensive compared to others in the area.”

  “Tried a couple of times as the first time we tried them last year we were served a soggy, oily mess. Thought we would re try too see if we caught them on a bad day and again we were served a stodgy, soggy mess from the chips too the stodgy batter and full of oil. Won't be trying a third time, was bloody awful, it all went in the bin apart from parts of the fish.”

  “I’d heard good things about The Railway Chippy and it absolutely lived up to the reputation. Tucked away in a quiet residential part of Whitby, it feels like a proper old-school chippy that hasn’t changed because it simply doesn’t need to. I went for the jumbo cod and chips, served in a box and absolutely loaded. The cod was spot on — crisp golden batter that shattered nicely but stayed stuck to the fish, and inside was thick, flaky white cod cooked perfectly. No grease, no soggy bits, just textbook fish and chips. The chips were thinner than the chunky style you sometimes get, but really well cooked: fluffy inside, lightly crisp on the edges and perfect with plenty of vinegar. I also thought the prices were excellent value in a world where everything seems expensive — especially for the portion size and quality. No gimmicks, no fuss, just brilliant traditional fish and chips done right. Exactly what you want in Whitby.”

  “We thought we would try fish and chips from the Railway Chippy as it wasn't far from where we were staying. We've had food from the top named chippy's in town on previous stays, but after having food from here, I doubt we'd go back to the others. The portions were enormous, and the price, for a regular fish and chips and a jumbo portion, came to just over £20. They were cooked there and then whilst we waited, so came out piping hot and smelling delicious. From going in and ordering, to walking out of the door with the food, was just under 10 minutes. As we walked into town with our food to sit by the harbour, the queue outside one of the more well known chippies must have been 20 people deep. I know where we'll go next time we're in Whitby!!”

  “I visited this delightful little chippy as I was staying nearby for the Whitby Goth Weekend. The service was excellent, and the lovely ladies who run this place are friendly and welcoming. I had a large haddock and chips for £10 which was an absolute bargain as the fish was huge and there were ample chips to share between two of us. Plus the chips were perfect, not too thick and not too thin. We will definitely be stopping by for a bite to eat again next time we're in Whitby”
