About The Boat Shed Cafe

The Boat Shed Cafe is a nautically themed cafe in Wareham, on the edge of Lulworth Cove, in a building that once served as a lock-up for local seafarers. Its position gives it views over the cove and the sea. Breakfast and lunch are both served, with seasonal specials and fish dishes on the menu, and the seafood chowder is on offer at lunch. Homemade cakes include a Victoria sponge, and the Dorset cream tea pairs scones with jam and clotted cream, served with tea. Ordering happens at the counter, where a pager signals when the food is ready. Customers collect it themselves and fetch their own cutlery and sauces. The cafe is small, with limited seating, and dogs are welcome. Parking is at the top of the village, about a five-minute walk down to the cove.

Customer Review Summary

The view across Lulworth Cove is what reviewers raise most, with several calling it outstanding and one ranking it among the best in the UK. Scones with jam and clotted cream earn the warmest food praise, and one reviewer calls them perfect. Close behind are a delicious seafood chowder, fabulous coffee and a very nice Victoria sponge. Several describe friendly staff. The complaints centre on breakfast and value. One reviewer found a breakfast tray lukewarm after a slow wait, with food that seemed reheated. Another was disappointed that bacon sandwiches held a single rasher and felt like a tourist trap. A hot chocolate came as lukewarm milky froth, a coffee tasted stewed, and one visitor arrived mid afternoon on a bank holiday weekend to find food no longer being served. One happy breakfast diner suggests arriving early before it gets busy. One visitor hoping for a Dorset cream tea found them all gone after a party of school children ordered the lot.

“Came down Thursday morning for a bacon sandwich and to be honest we were disappointed. The sandwichs only had 1 rasher of bacon in each. For what was charged we can only say it felt like a bit of a tourist trap. The service was great and the staff were nice. The cafe is situated right on the cove in a beautiful spot.”

“Nice food, fabulous coffee and a lovely view! After a really nice lunch we walked to Durdle Door and back and called in a second time, hoping to try a Dorset Cream Tea. Unfortunately, we arrived seconds after a party of French school children who ordered every last one! We had to make do with Victoria sponge cake, but it was very nice😁”

“We had planned a trip to Dorset and decided to stop off on the way, as my partner had never visited Lulworth Cove or Durdle Door. Since we set off early, we thought it would be a great opportunity to have breakfast there, having read positive things about the Boat Shed Café. The location and views looked fantastic, and it seemed like the perfect way to start a bank holiday weekend. We arrived in Lulworth at around 9:30am, had a short walk down to the beach, and then headed to the café for breakfast. My partner went in to order but was gone for quite some time and returned looking disappointed. She explained that there were only two staff working and service was very slow. We also noticed there was no sign or smell of breakfasts being cooked, which stood out, especially as we had walked past other places earlier where the smell of bacon and fresh cooking was noticeable and appetising. After about 20 minutes, I received the pager notification to collect the food. When I went inside, the breakfast was already sitting on a tray behind the counter. I was handed the tray and collected cutlery and sauces myself. At first glance, the food didn’t look particularly appetising or good value for the price. When we sat down to eat, the food was only lukewarm at best. My partner later went back inside for a drink and again noticed there was still no sign or smell of any fresh cooking, despite food continuing to be served. This gave the impression that the food may have been pre-cooked and reheated. Considering the cost, the quality and temperature of the food were disappointing and fell well below our expectations. While we understand this is a busy tourist area, we would still expect a higher standard, particularly given how important customer experience and feedback are for seasonal businesses. In all honesty, while we would return to the area, we would not choose to eat or drink at this café again. We found it to be overpriced and offering very little in return.”

“The Boat Shed is a nice seaside shack. I had toast and marmalade which was fine but took far too long to be served as it was not busy. The hot chocolate I ordered for my other half was actually luke warm milky froth with a faint hint of chocolate. My coffee was hot but tasted stewed. I suggest you make the hot chocolate without foamed milk and put more chocolate in it and also ensure it is hot, otherwise call it something else. A pity because it is a nice place in a good spot with a good view. Dogs should kept outside for good hygeine plus the fact it is a small place.”
