About The Boat Cafe

The Boat Cafe is a seafront cafe and snack bar at 41 Esplanade in Weymouth, where rear decking leads straight onto the beach and looks over the sandy bay. The menu runs to 85 items. Breakfast baps such as the Bacon & Egg Bap sit alongside fish and chips served with a side salad. Ice cream sundaes cover the sweet end of the list. Orders are placed at the till, so the counter is the place to start before taking a seat by the sand. Dogs are welcome, which suits a walk along the esplanade and a stop for a drink on the way.

Customer Review Summary

Fish and chips is the most discussed order at this seafront café, and reviewers split sharply on it. One calls the fish beautifully battered with crisp, thick chips and a good amount of salad, while others describe rock-hard batter that broke a wooden fork, and chips that were hard and tasted as if the oil needed changing. A calamari order with a side of chips drew the same chip complaint. Close behind, reviewers praise the friendly, polite staff, even when busy, and the beach views from the benches and decking. Cheesy chips, an egg mayonnaise sandwich, freshly made baguettes, ice creams and flat whites each get a good word, and a few call prices fair for a seafront spot. Dog friendliness comes up too. Other complaints include a double espresso repeatedly arriving like an americano, warm beer and cider, and a burger and chips that seemed cooked long before. One reviewer reports poor hygiene at the ice cream counter, with no gloves worn. One diner notes there are no toilets.

“Great service with really friendly staff. Prices are OK for a seafront cafe.”
  • Melanie
“Lovely cafe sat on the esplanade overlooking the sandy beach - There are lots of chairs, benches and umbrellas around - The umbrellas are a great seagull deterrent!! Lovely service at the till by a young girl who took our order, food came out about 5/10 mins after ordering and it looked lovely. Husband ordered the calamari with a side portion of chips and myself had the fish n chips. The salad with the french dressing with the calamari itself was lovely, the battered fish could have been little less oily but still tasted good HOWEVER the chips were awful, hard and like they had been cooked several times over or the frying oil needs changing, not nice at all…. Hubby wouldn’t order chips again especially as our two meals came to £35 with a drink so quite expensive. We should have said something but just made do or left some on the side”

“Honestly this place is great, what's better than sitting on the sea front with nice food, they change staff often however service is always great.”

“Worst fish and chips i have ever had the misfortune to eat , more batter than fish and that was rock hard , literally broke the wooden fork ! The chips were like stones as well , Avoid this place ... they even charged me £12 for the privilege joke”
  • Ashley Denton
“Food and drinks well priced for being right on the beach. Freshly made baguettes are good.”
