About Gigi's cafe

Gigi's cafe sits on St Mary St as an independent cafe in Weymouth town centre, with a small seating area of small tables and no need to book. Toasties and paninis anchor the menu, with a bacon, Brie and cranberry panini and a Hunters chicken and bacon toastie among them, and the cakes are made in house, from Dorset apple cake to coffee and walnut and banoffee. Coffee and teas by the pot come alongside. The team adapts meals for dietary needs, covering gluten free and dairy free with vegan cheese, and works around nut allergies. Ordering happens at the counter, and a queue forms at lunchtime. Dogs are welcome inside, and high chairs mean families with young children can settle in for a meal. Tables outside suit anyone who prefers to eat in the open air, and the doors open daily.

Customer Review Summary

The cake counter draws the most attention, with reviewers singling out Dorset apple cake with cream and a range that runs from banoffee to blueberry and lemon and even avocado and courgette. Close behind come the toasted sandwiches, a bacon, Brie and cranberry panini called one of the best a reviewer had tasted, and a Hunters chicken and bacon toasty adapted to be gluten and dairy free, alongside coffee several describe as rich and made as requested. Others mention a nut allergy accommodated with a swapped order, a chocolate milkshake recommended by one visitor, and the small, cosy, dog friendly room. The complaints are specific: one diner found the soup tasted tinned and was told it was heated from a tin in a microwave, with nachos arriving under dressed, while another describes dry, overly sweet cake, uncleared plates and a forgotten cake order collected from the counter unprompted. Several note the tables are cramped.

“We found Gigi's on find me gluten free app, and I'm gluten intolerant and milk intolerant. It was very busy and bustling with customers, it is a small cafe. The sign says take a seat and come to the counter to order. We received a lovely warm and friendly greeting from a young lady, despite being rushed off her feet. I think a lot of us had turned up at a similar time. We ordered one gf/df Hunters chicken and bacon toasty with vegan cheese, and one normal Hunters chicken and bacon toasty. Hubby had americano in a really nice sized mug, and i had red bush tea served in a cute teapot. We had a just little wait for our food as we were last in that queue to order, but that was ok with us, as it was all cooked fresh for us, and we chatted whilst we waiting. It was really tasty, they adapted my meal so it didn't contain milk&gluten. Hubby enjoyed his food and drink too. Nice cosy atmosphere, and dog friendly too. They had a lovely selection of cakes, but we couldn't for one in today! We had an enjoyable experience.”

“Amazing Dorset apple cake with cream. Good coffee, lovely people and 80's easy listening music. A really great independent coffee shop”

“Ordered 2 soups and nachos. Each soup was £4.50, it tasted like tinned so we asked how it was made and was confirmed to be made in a microwave from a tin. Somewhat misleading as it wasn't mentioned to be Heinz on the menu. Nachos were around £7 and came with 3 tiny portions of dips - which i believe are also store bought - and a small amount of cheese on top. Quite overpriced and disappointing quality of food. Tables were also small but staff were nice.”

“Was looking for an independent cafe and picked Gigi’s as the ambience looked promising, not overly busy and clean without the ‘greasy spoon’ smell. We didn’t have much time to find elsewhere so stuck with our choice but spent £30.00 for two toasties, 2 drinks and 2 slices of cake; I found £7.00 for a ham and cheese toastie to be very excessive! Everything else was reasonably priced but the food wasn’t even a particularly high standard for the cost. Plenty of cakes to choose from though which enticed me but sadly my cake was rather dry and overly sweet. Table space was small and we weren’t served our cake so I assumed they would bring it to us when we had finished the meal but no one bothered to take away our empty plates or mention our cakes, and we were sat right in front of the till!! I took the liberty of taking my plates up myself and requesting my cakes which they had forgotten about. I also saw two other issues with customers; one being overcharged and one looked like they may have received a refund as they left straight after using the card machine. Whilst I appreciate independent businesses, I’m afraid I won’t be going back as the prices were not in keeping with the food quality or service, also the vibe wasn’t that great.”
