About The Fingerpost pub.

The Fingerpost pub sits directly on the canal at York's Foundry Bridge in Walsall, where boaters moor up to eat and upstairs decking gives tables for outdoor dining. The kitchen runs to around 57 dishes, with Pork Belly Bites and Halloumi Fries (v) among the smaller plates and burgers appearing across the menu, including a tandoori fish burger and lunchtime burgers served with chips and 'slaw. Booking ahead is advised, since food is served to booked tables and the kitchen stops taking orders later in the evening. The team seats guests rather than leaving them to find a table. A step-free, wheelchair-accessible entrance helps visitors with mobility needs get in from the towpath side, and dogs are welcome alongside their owners. The pub opens daily and runs a quiz night. A change of management has brought a menu different from the previous year's.

Customer Review Summary

Food earns the most consistent praise, with the pork belly singled out as succulent and flavourful, lunchtime burgers served with chips and slaw called tasty and good value, and one table adding cheesy mushrooms and garlic bread alongside a cold Guinness and San Miguel; the same table's one gripe was a tandoori fish burger that fell short on tandoori flavour. Close behind, the staff are repeatedly described as friendly, polite and welcoming, and one group notes the chef came out to talk through his passion for the food. Several mention the canalside setting and upstairs decking, though one reviewer wants the decking restained and its planting refreshed, and found the seats low against the tables. A run of complaints centres on getting fed at all: one party was refused food when they asked to order in the evening, repeat visitors describe waiting to be seated, a longtime regular now calls the menu standard pub food, and another met a sign reading no food unless booked in a quiet room, then learned the chalkboard pork bon-bons were off.

We’ve visited the pub many times over the last few months and sadly keep encountering the same issues. We waited a good 5 or so minutes before being served to be seated to a table …

1st visit here. little canal side pub. We went on the upstairs decking. Decking needs a bit of TLC ,flowers, greenery, hanging baskets need refreshing. Decking could do with a fresh staining. Seats were a bit low compared to the tables. Staff were lovely, friendly and welcoming. Food was delicious! We had lunchtime burgers served with chips and 'slaw. Very tasty and good value. Guiness and San Miguel lovely and cold. No negative comments on the food or drinks, and just observational feedback on the decking. Would we come here again?...YES
  • jackie vale
Big sign upon entrance saying ‘no food unless booked’, which was strange as the place wasn’t busy at all. Chalk board on the bar advertising pork bon-bons, which were apparent …

Sadly not the place we visited last year. Menu has gone absolutely awful ( standard pub food ) . As a boater I will not be mooring hear again for grub. Just another reason for boaters not to come up this canal

How this listing is sourced

Where the data comes from
Name, address, hours, contact details, amenities, ratings and review counts come from the business's publicly available profile data — not from the owner and not from paid submissions.
How it stays current
Listings are re-checked in batches against their public profile, and anything reported as wrong is corrected at the source rather than patched on the page.
How it is ranked
Placement is never sold. Every business on the page is ordered and compared using the same public signals, so an owner cannot pay to move up.
