Quick info
About The Sheringham Trawler
The Sheringham Trawler is a fish & chips restaurant at 50 High St in Sheringham, almost opposite the theatre. The kitchen cooks its chips in beef dripping and uses a maize-free batter. Guests can bring their own bottle to have with the meal. Fish and chips comes with mushy peas, and the menu includes a gluten-free fish option for those avoiding gluten. The Over 60s special pairs cod, chips and mushy peas with a tea or coffee. Skate wing must be ordered about four hours ahead, so it suits a planned visit. This is an eat-in restaurant with themed decor, and some tables are reserved in advance. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often praise the fish and chips themselves, singling out plaice that tasted fresh with batter that melted in the mouth, and a nicely battered fish with good flavour. Chips cooked in beef dripping earn a mention for their depth of flavour, and the mushy peas and scraps get a nod too. Close behind is the Over 60s special of cod, chips, mushy peas and a hot drink, which two reviewers call excellent value. One diner with a maize allergy found the batter maize-free. Several describe friendly, efficient staff, and one notes the bring-your-own-bottle option and that skate wing needs ordering hours ahead. The complaints are pointed. One reviewer describes a gluten free haddock with translucent batter and undercooked fish, then a rude response when asking for chips instead. Another reports soggy, mushed-together chips and staff who glared and ignored them on a takeaway visit. A third calls it the worst fish and chips they have had. One reviewer who ate in during the winter found both food and service good, and a family's takeaway arrived delicious just after opening.

“We’ve stopped at this fish and chip restaurant in the past and decided to stop here for lunch when we were in Sheringham for the day. Overall, our experience was very positive and we had a really lovely fish and chips lunch. Food Quality Our party ordered fish and chips and pie and chips with baked beans and mushy peas on the side. As our food was cooked to order, it came to the table, hot and fresh. The fish was nicely battered and had a really good flavour. The chips were just right – not too soft and not too crispy. The portion size seemed just about right. Value for money Our party felt the value for money was right. Two in our group ordered the “Over 60s special”, which in our opinion was amazing value for money, considering it also came with a side and a drink. Atmosphere/Layout The restaurant is appropriately decorated and themed, and the atmosphere was light. Service/Timeframe We came in shortly after the restaurant opened, and our order was taken quickly, and the food came to the table quickly, but we noticed that some people do reserve their table to ensure a place, and as things got busier the wait times could be affected. The service was overall smooth, knowledgeable, and completely professional—she kept everything running seamlessly, even if her approach was a bit more formal. Based on our prior experience and the experience at this visit, we would be happy to return and enjoy a really good fish and chips meal in the future. I would be happy to recommend “The Sheringham Trawler” to anyone looking for a classic and tasty dining Fish and Chips meal out.”

“Loved it here. Really tasty fish, chips and mushy peas, so much better than what you get in the surrounding pubs (which can be awful). Plus you can bring a bottle, a nice touch! Just to note that if you want to order a skate wing, you need to do so 4 hours beforehand.”

“We are a family of four adults and arrived when they opened today. Really friendly staff (both young women) who were polite and efficient. We had a takeaway which was really delicious and reasonably priced. We have also eaten in (during the winter) and the food and service were good. Would recommend”

“This is my favourite takeaway chip shop in Sheringham. Usually the staff are very friendly, with good quality chips. However we went again last night and I unfortunately won’t be returning again. The place was being run by a bunch of teenage girls, who had awful customer service skills. They glared at you as you walked in, with no greeting or smile. I’ve worked in restaurants before so I understand being tired and working long days, however I genuinely felt like their was an issue when I walked in and felt very uncomfortable. A girl took my order- a very awkward encounter as she barely spoke to me when I tried to make small talk and seemed visibly annoyed at me. There was a long queue before me waiting for their orders so I took my brought drink outside to my husband and children. I was less than 5 mins gone, when I returned inside to somehow my order being ready almost immediately. I have never received an order from this place so quickly, especially with a queue. The entire staff glared at me as they were calling out my order for collection, I apologised that I went outside as I wasn’t expecting it to be so quick. I got nothing but silence and stares. I tried to make small talk with a different girl who was wrapping up my order, but she also ignored me. At the end I smiled at her and said have a good night but she just walked away. They salt and vinegar’d the chips themselves but you could not taste it. The chips were genuinely vile, soggy, mushed together and tasted off. Even my children wouldn’t eat them. We ended up throwing them in the bin. Very disappointing experience all around.”
