About Upstairs @ NO1 Cromer

Upstairs at NO1 Cromer is a first-floor restaurant on New Street in Cromer, with tables set above the street and views over the pier and the coastline. The menu leans heavily on seafood, covering dishes such as monkfish wrapped in pancetta, lobster thermidor, and a seafood chowder, alongside traditional fish and chips cooked to order. A private dining room at the back handles larger groups, while the main upstairs room takes advance bookings for the busier services. Walk-ins tend to face a wait, especially for downstairs seating during peak hours. Service runs through the day and into the evening, with the sea view framing the meal throughout.

Customer Review Summary

Diners single out the seafood, with the seafood chowder, monkfish wrapped in pancetta, and lobster thermidor drawing the most repeated praise, alongside the fish and chips that several regulars call the best in Norfolk. The setting over the pier and coastline comes up almost as often as the food, with reviewers describing the view as pleasant and relaxing and the upstairs dining room as worth booking ahead, as several suggest. Service is consistently described as friendly, polite, and accommodating, often noted alongside the meal. A small number of diners raise concerns, including a crab salad served on a smoky wooden board that left the bread and salad tasting of wood, a tagliatelle dish they found too spicy with dry crab, and a report of flies in the dining room. One reviewer also describes a standard, unremarkable calamari starter. Most accounts end on a return visit or a strong recommendation to book the upstairs restaurant in advance.

“Made a beeline for this place based on online reviews. Was not disappointed. Polite & helpful service. I started with scallops which were juicy and fresh. The lobster thermidor was delicious and the accompanying fries were amongst the best I’ve ever had. Finished off with banana ice cream accompanied with a double espresso. Superb lunch.”

“It was lovely to be able to have a meal looking out across the Cromer peer and coastline. As a starter we had the seafood chowder and the calamari. I would say that the seafood chowder was a standout winner with plenty of fish and an amazing taste. The calamari was very standard and did not overly stand out but was tasty nonetheless. For mains we had the monkfish wrapped in pancetta and the taglatelli prawn pasta. The monkfish wrapped in pancetta was impressive with flavours. We will remember for a long time. However, the taglatelli did not quite meet expectations, for us being too spicy and the poor crab being quite dry, however, the prawns in this dish were lovely.”

“Had a fantastic lunch at No1 Cromer Upstairs yesterday. I had the monkfish and Theresa had the lobster Thermidor – both were absolutely delicious. The service was excellent too, with a friendly and attentive team throughout. Keep up the great work, Team No1! We'll definitely be back.”
