About No1 Cromer Downstairs Restaurant

On New Street in Cromer, No1 Cromar Downstairs Restaurant is a fish and seafood restaurant set on the Norfolk coast, with the ground floor of a town centre building given over to table service. The menu centres on fish and chips alongside other seaside staples such as sausage and chips and halloumi fries, with curry sauce available as an accompaniment and a separate kids menu for younger diners. The kids meals are served in a bucket and spade, which doubles as a keepsake. A queue is common at lunchtime, so the team runs the room on a walk-in basis. The seaside location puts the restaurant within easy reach of the seafront and the town's main streets.

Customer Review Summary

The curry sauce is the most consistent complaint. Reviewers describe it as awful, quite sweet, and rank, and one first-time visitor said it put them off coming back. One diner gives the restaurant a low rating and reports being bullied by staff.

“We had a lovely meal at No.1 Cromer overlooking beautiful Cromer beach. I had the gluten-free fish and chips with onion rings — absolutely delicious! The batter was lovely and crispy, the chips tasted freshly made, and it was great to have such good gluten-free options. Great service, a beautiful seaside setting and definitely somewhere I would recommend. They also have No.1 Cromer Fish & Chips take out at the back of the restaurant which is a slightly cheaper and more casual option. Cromer itself is a wonderful place to visit and this was the perfect place to enjoy some proper seaside fish and chips!”

“There really isn’t much to say here, but I had to give a 5 star review. The food was absolutely delicious, very well sized portions with more than enough food. Very clean and very well looked after. The service was excellent and everything was cooked to order. Everything was fresh as well. I beautiful touch was the small bucket and spades given with children’s meals. They came with chips in. It was lovely, and you got to keep them! Attention to detail was wonderful. Is a little pricy for fish and chips, but for the overall experience, it was worth it. Especially to see the kids faces light up at the bucket and spades given!! Thankyou so much. I highly recommend”

“First time I’ve eaten from No1 and I won’t be returning. For having such a good name, the chips were average and the curry sauce was awful, and all of us made comment on how rank it was. For being on the coast, I would expect it to be quality, especially for the money. Norwich has far better chippys than this place. Wish I went round the corner to Mary Jane’s🤦🏻‍♂️”
