About The Black Friar

The Black Friar is a gastropub at 41-43 Blackfriars Rd in Salford, with a traditional pub area, a modern glass restaurant and a beer garden. The bottomless roast comes with complimentary cauliflower cheese, so the table can keep going back for more. The roast menu offers a choice of two or three courses, and the pie of the day is one of the roast options. Upstairs, the dining area has table service, while the bar serves cocktails and wine. For weddings and private events, a private room with its own washroom gives groups a space of their own.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often come for the Sunday roast, with the roast beef described as piping hot and perfectly cooked, and the pie of the day roast also earning praise. Close behind are the weddings and events held here, including a private room for a singles dinner and two wedding celebrations, where reviewers credit the team for making the day feel relaxed and stress-free. Other dishes diners name include the scotch egg, fish and chips, Manchester tart and a bottomless roast with a pie, along with a mull spiced soda and a special cocktail. Servers are repeatedly singled out for friendly, attentive service and good drink recommendations. The few criticisms are small: one reviewer found the rib eye could have been fattier and thought cod would suit the bass sauce better, and another felt the lobster was expensive for the portion. Several mention the complimentary cauliflower cheese served with the roasts, and a free birthday dessert cake.

“Had 2 meals here recently. Well to be specific I’ve had 2 pies here recently. Both times the food was absolutely superb and the service also. We had a great waiter Timur who was great fun and really looked after us. Can we request him next time? We also had a lovely table yesterday for the bottomless roast (with a pie!) and they made a fuss of my son as he turns 30 this week. Everything was cooked perfectly and the drinks were flowing very nicely. Really enjoyed the special cocktail as well. I told the chefs on the way out that I’d enjoyed their food more than Stow the night before and I meant it. Will be back very soon. Highly recommended.”

“Went for a family dinner at the weekend and it was the most delightful experience! Food was incredible and great drink selection also. We went to enjoy the Summer of Boddies and it was every bit as exciting as I thought it would be. Special shout out to Sophie for her recommendations and incredible service. Thank you, Sophie!”

“My family and I spent a weekend in Manchester and we couldn’t leave without having a Sunday roast. The food was unbelievable: even though my sister is a picky eater, she enjoyed everything. I’d say the prices are affordable considering the quality of the food and service. The menus are flexible, so if you wish to order just a main course it’s 25£, a two-course menu is 32£, and a three-course menu is 39£. Our waitress was very helpful as well as attentive and recommended that we combine different menus, and that’s what we did. The restaurant also treated us to a side of creamy cauliflower, which was very good. We were 3 people and paid a total amount of 90£ for three main courses and a dessert, namely: an amazing fish and chips, a yummy beef Sunday roast, a scrumptious pie of the day Sunday roast, and a decadent Manchester tart.”

“We had a wonderful Sunday afternoon at Blackfriars. The roast beef dinner was absolutely beautiful, piping hot, perfectly cooked, and one of the best roasts we’ve had in a long time. The desserts were just as delicious and the perfect way to finish a fantastic meal. A special mention has to go to Will, who is an absolute credit to the restaurant and to his profession. He made some excellent recommendations for both the cocktails and the wine, and his friendly, attentive service really made our visit extra special. You could tell he genuinely wanted to look after us and make sure we had the best possible experience. From the outstanding food to the exceptional service, everything was spot on. We had a lovely afternoon and would highly recommend Blackfriars. We’ll definitely be back! 😘”
