About The Fox and Duck
The Fox and Duck is a village pub on The Green in Therfield, Royston, with tables at the front. The kitchen cooks a gastro-style menu that includes the Foxy Beef Burger, fish and chips, and sticky toffee pudding, with a roast dinner as well. The bar pours craft and other beers. When the pub kitchen is not running, a burger van outside serves food, and you can bring your burger inside and eat it with a pint. Dogs are welcome. The car park offers ample space for those arriving by car.

Customer Review Summary
Fish draws the most praise: fish and chips with light batter, and hake with samphire whose flesh flaked off the fork, alongside a calamari starter. Close behind are the truffle chips, sticky toffee pudding, and a pork tomahawk with warm savoy slaw, with a charcuterie board also mentioned. Staff are repeatedly called friendly, and the beer choice gets a nod. The main complaints are price and uneven mains. One diner found a burger pink inside with a soggy brioche bun, and another called a roast dinner very poor, citing bad-tasting Yorkshire puddings and potatoes and a stingy portion of cheesy cauliflower. A ploughman's came with a small piece of ham that seemed packeted, a disappointing sausage roll, and no pickle. A few call the food overpriced for pub grub, and one says the tables on the green are worn out and the umbrellas need replacing. Motorhome visitors praise the quiet, and one was allowed to bring a burger from the van outside in with a pint.

“Six of us went to the Fox and Duck for a meal to celebrate my husband’s big birthday. It was our first visit here and we enjoyed it very much. The food was excellent - piping hot and well presented - and the service and courtesy of staff faultless. It is certainly somewhere we shall visit again and we recommend it wholeheartedly.”

“What a great place! I arrived on a Tuesday evening hoping for food, a drink, some atmosphere, and somewhere to sleep in my camper van - it did not disappoint. There's no pub food on Tuesdays, but a gourmet burger from the van outside was allowed inside with a pint. A super friendly barmaid and local darts match gave plenty of atmosphere, and the quiet car park made for a great night's sleep. Highly recommend!”

“We decided to stop at the Fox & Duck for lunch on Thursday 01/10/2026 and unfortunately, the experience was a little disappointing. I ordered a pint of Guinness & black along with the Foxy Beef Burger, which came to just over £23. For a quick pub lunch, I felt this was quite expensive, especially considering the quality of the main course. The food arrived nicely presented, and I have to say the chips were delicious. Unfortunately, the burger itself was pink inside and, for me, this really spoilt the meal. I also found that the salad made the brioche bun rather soggy. As we were only stopping for a quick lunch, I didn’t want to complain and have to wait for another burger to be cooked, so I simply ate what I could. However, I do feel there is no excuse for a beef burger being served undercooked, particularly when it wasn’t requested that way. There were some positives, especially the presentation and the excellent chips, but unfortunately the burger and the price meant the lunch didn’t live up to expectations.”

“For the first time in a while I recently had lunch in this nice pub in a lovely location with ample parking. I think it may have changed hands since my last visit, but it is still a good place for a pub lunch. The staff are very friendly and the service is efficient. The food is not expensive but what I had was a bit disappointing: a Ploughman’s lunch with a fairly small portion of cheese, a small piece of ‘gammon ham’ (which seemed to just be ordinary packeted ham), a sausage roll which wasn't very nice, no onions, no pickle, but a good quantity of very nice bread. It was OK, and reasonable value, but nothing special. On the other hand, my wife’s chicken caesar salad was good, and also good value. The coffee is also good. All the usual drinks are available though, surprisingly, not grapefruit juice. It’s great to be able to eat on the village green at the front (subject to availability), but many of the tables are worn out and need refurbishing or replacing, and the sun umbrellas also need replacing. I feel slightly bad leaving a less than glowing review as the staff are so nice, but I do think that what is currently a perfectly good village pub could, with just a few changes, be a real gem.”

“Excellent food. My parents ran Chinese restaurants and I know how difficult it is to get each plate just right. I had calamari to start, and hake with potatoes and samphire for mains. The dishes were well cooked and the fish was absolutely spot on. The flesh just flaking off. Price is reasonable, especially compared to the pubs going towards Cambridge area. The only little niggle I had was that Therfield is not somewhere you would merely just drive through. So you have to make a special trip to eat there. But well worth it. Thank you chef, top work!”
