  “Great find, we out for a sunny evening drive. Wonderful countryside in these parts though the twisty roads need to be taken with care, would be great to drive them fast, but you might not be in a condition to actually get to the pub due to others oncoming being somewhat middle of the road on narrow twisty bits from. Saffron Walden. The sweets were actually worth ordering (in many pubs, I swerve them). Beer; the only thing missing is options on real ale. Do they have any micro brewers in the area that could supply something different?”

  “Great gastropub! Visited twice whilst on holiday in the local area. Nice to see a pub with a few different things on the menu aside from the usual classics. Friendly service (Daisy served us twice) - she was helpful when advising about dish sizes and sides, as well as giving us tips on local walks and bringing water for our dog. General quality of food was excellent in clearly what is a very busy pub. Manager also managed to accomodate a last minute change for our 2nd booking given a fully booked restaurant which I really apppreciated. Rolled lamb belly with pearl barley and pesto was delicious - perfectly cooked and very tasty (minor critique, something pickled/acidity was needed to cut through the richness of the dish, and hard to eat from a bowl with so many elements that ended up being mixed in together). Very tasty whole plaice with cider butter sauce & fennel (again, perfectly cooked). Wild garlic soup and roast that my husband has also excellent. Cured trout starter very tasty but a little lacking in portion size (photos on social media/menu show 3 decent slices, mine was 2 slim slices). Szechuan seasoning on the fries was genius - not seen/tasted that before and something differet from the usual seasoned fries. Desserts also decent but too full on our 2nd visit to sample more! Good drinks menu and offered a non alcoholic version of their cocktails too for me. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend and would return if in the area again!”

  “I regularly eat and explore the dining options of the area and this place is standout for exactly what’s wrong with the pub trade these days .. average food with little imagination served by indifference staff and at inflated price. The only plus was the service was so poor that I didn’t even get to experience dessert as was never offered it . Waited finished my beer .. no one came after 15 minutes so abandoned it and left after two courses. One of the most disappointing dinners of the year. So many better options locally or in Cambridge.”

  “We visited our local pub for Sunday lunch recently and had a really lovely experience overall. It’s within walking distance for us, and it’s such a beautiful, traditional-looking pub full of charm and character. It has exactly the kind of cosy atmosphere you want for a relaxed Sunday afternoon roast lunch. The food was delicious for the most part. The roast lamb was absolutely the highlight - so tender and full of flavour. The beef, while still tasty, was slightly chewy and cooked quite rare. That said, the rest of the plate was excellent. The roast potatoes were crispy, the cauliflower cheese was good, and the Yorkshire pudding was delicious. The vegetables were cooked well, nicely seasoned, and complemented the meal perfectly. Good sized portions. For dessert, we had the chocolate bomb. It was nice, but slightly underwhelming compared to how impressive a ‘chocolate bomb’ sounds. Service was generally good - friendly and attentive - although we did need to ask for our coffee twice. It didn’t spoil the experience, but it was noticeable. The music was great and really helped create a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Overall, it’s a beautiful spot for Sunday lunch with high-quality food. It is priced on the higher end in comparison for Sunday lunches however the pub is rated in the top 100. We will return and would recommend to friends and family.”

  “A sensational Sunday lunch. Mum had roast beef cooked to perfection. I had the pot roasted cabbage as I’m a veggie, it was stunning. Sweet was just as good mum had the most amazing apple pie and I had the blood orange mousse. The atmosphere was perfect and the staff very friendly and welcoming. It’s also dog friendly. The food was plentiful and so tasty we will be returning.”

  “We visited the Fox & Hounds with high expectations, especially as it was a finalist in sustainability awards and previously held a Michelin star. Unfortunately, the experience fell well below what we expected. Inside, the pub was already open, but the team were still in a meeting with bags and coats spread out. We waited around 15–20 minutes without being greeted or acknowledged. The menu didn’t offer any fresh juices or non-alcoholic options besides carton juice, which is surprising for a place that highlights sustainability. The staff were polite but didn’t offer much warmth or explanation about the pub’s concept. As for the food: it looked nice, but the portions were extremely small for the price. I left still feeling hungry after my main, which has never happened to me in a pub of this calibre. We were also asked if the meal was fine less than a minute after the plates arrived, before we even had time to taste anything. Overall, the reputation and awards create an expectation that the actual experience doesn’t meet. It’s not a place we would return to. The pub has potential, but it needs more care with the welcome, the atmosphere, portion sizes and delivering a clearer sustainability experience. Note: the small greenhouse was the only visible nod to sustainability, but it felt very minimal and not actively used. We were also not asked about any allergies or intolerances, which was unexpected for a place of this standard.”

  “I've wanted to visit for a feed for a while so we decided to drive up and head in on a whim just as the kitchen opened on Saturday evening. Served with fresh ale and sat immediately, we were. What a treat. The pork chop and steak were delectable, as were the sides of tenderstem and carrots. Managed to squeeze in a wedge of the spiced plum tart, which, I reckon, I could eat endlessly. The service, too, was excellent, and the atmosphere relaxed. I could have sat and sipped and nibbled all night, but we had to get home to the mutt. What a beautiful pub and dinner. I look forward to returning.”

  “We were very much looking forward to our celebratory dinner but were unfortunately let down by the very underwhelming lamb main : consisting of just one bitesize lamb cutlet on top of extremely salty and rich lamb shoulder and puy lentil stew for £27. The crab starter and orange mousse hazelnut cake were lovely though. Maybe we have ordered the wrong main as we got very food envied by the tomahawk on another table. They did take in our feedback, apologise and deduct a bit from the bill but I don't think we will return.”

  “Excellent food, excellent service will be returning soon! ***Update** Returned 2 weeks later and had a different starter, main and dessert just as excellent as the first time and the extra bonus this time is that Wednesday and Thursdays in July they have 20% off food! So an absolute bargain for such wonderful food.”
