About The Standing Order
On High St in Stevenage, The Standing Order is a pub in the Wetherspoon chain, found at number 33. Real ales lead the drinks list, with guest ales and a wide selection of beer alongside them. Thatchers cider joins the ales for drinkers who want something other than beer. The kitchen sends out unfussy food with no frills, a plain accompaniment to the drinks on offer. Families are welcome at the pub, which serves both its ales and its food from the same site.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often come for the beer. Diners single out the guest ales, Hazy Jane and Thatchers, and a buffalo dark amber ale with a nice old fashioned malty taste, and one calls the selection of fine beer massive. Close behind is value, with the breakfast and a meal of two dinners described as a bargain next to delivery or most places. The pub itself earns praise for a glass roof with colorful ribbons, comfortable seating, phone charging slots and a nice beer garden. Food is called alright and typical Spoons, though a new meat pie struck one diner as small. The most detailed complaints concern the kitchen. One table received stone cold chips, lumpy room temperature gravy, wings that arrived as battered chicken bites, and a halloumi salad missing its listed ingredients. Staff draw split reactions, lovely to some and miserable to others, and a few mention slow food and drinks. One reviewer reports dirty toilets, and another was handed a dirty glass at the bar and had to ask for a clean one.

“Myself and a friend of mine visited here on the 27/08/2026 for a dinner out and for £30 for two dinners is a bargain, cheaper than Just Eat/Deliveroo for two and cheaper than most places. Definitely a 5 out of 5 stars from us.”

“Great staff but disappointed with the food delivery and coldness. Halloumi & Mediterranean vegetable salad came with nothing listed on the menu. No roasted peppers no courgette no pico de gallo. Ordered chips with 2 of our meals, the chips came out stone cold. Extra gravy came to our table room temperature and lumpy. Could not eat. 99p but at least bring it out hot. Order of chicken wings came out as battered chicken bites. Staff are lovely but wow the food came out a shambles with 2 wrong things and 3 cold things. Disappointed as we have eaten here before last year and it was fine the chips were hot etc.”

“This was a fantastic pub for drinking, featuring a glass roof with colorful ribbons underneath! Diagonal patterns down from the ceiling and transport imagery on the wall are notable features, counter has a solid presentation through the gold structure there. Enjoyed one of the guest ales and seating is comfortable, phone charging slots also available!”
