About Ye Olde Hob Inn

Ye Olde Hob Inn is a gastropub at 8-9 Church Rd in Preston, set in a family-run building dating to 1616 with a thatched roof and Tudor-style beams. The kitchen cooks grills, pizza, burgers and sandwiches, with a Steak and Ale pie on the menu and a Sunday roast served with Yorkshire pudding and roast potatoes. A midweek lunch menu runs alongside the regular list. At the bar, hand-pulled ales include Theakston XB, with lager, cider, wines and spirits also poured. Dogs are welcome inside, so walkers can bring them along. Ownership changed recently, and the family-run approach continues. Drivers can use the inn's own car park, with more parking on the road outside, close to Junction 29 of the M6.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers return most for the Steak and Ale pie, praised for tender meat and great flavours, with triple cooked chips and hand cut chips mentioned alongside it. Close behind are the Sunday roast, with a freshly cooked Yorkshire pudding, pink beef and garlic and thyme roast potatoes, followed by sticky toffee pudding, and the fish and chips with chunky "hob" chips. A crispy chicken burger, a juicy smoky burger, proper pizzas and a club sandwich also earn mentions, along with a midweek lunch menu described as excellent value. Hand pulled ales and tea and coffee come up too. Staff are repeatedly called friendly, and the thatched roof and old beams draw comment. The main caveat is upkeep and choice. One reviewer found the interior cluttered, with ketchup bottles and boxes of crisps stacked up, a blocked fireplace and a small Christmas tree on a plug-in fire in October, and thought the car park untidy. The same reviewer, a vegetarian, found few meat-free options and was not told the cheese and onion pie came with meat gravy. Another visitor said the chef came personally to check everything was to their liking.

“Just a quick stop to break up the journey after discovering that the location of the battle of Bamber Bridge was just 5 minutes off the motorway. Nice tea and coffee provided by wonderful staff in the middle of the day.”

“Our 2nd visit to The Hob,my sister and I went for Sunday lunch 4weeks ago(excellent!!) and today we decided to try a midweek lunch. Myself, my sister and our cousin all had items from the 12pound menu(mon-thur) and have to say it was excellent value. Delicious food, freshly cooked, good portions and a varied menu, all served in comfortable surroundings by cheerful and attentive staff. I would happily recommend anyone to try it and will most certainly be returning with my family and friends-more than worth the trip from cleveleys!”

“First time having visited for lunch, I have to say it was very good indeed. A simply club sandwich and a coffee for about £12 and worth every penny. Food was superb. Service absolutely excellent.”

“Wanted to have lunch while on our way to N Yorkshire and didn’t want to venture too far from the M6 on our way, so decided to call at Ye OLDE HOB Inn. So glad we did, as we had lovely, home made, pub food. The Steak and Ale Pie and triple cooked chips were to die for and the Crispy Chicken Burger was really thick and tasty. All in all the food was really filling and the restaurant was busy, which is always a good sign. We will certainly make this our go to place to eat next time we’re travelling past Jcn 29 of the M6. Staff were also a credit to the establishment. Very friendly and helpful. Plenty of parking in its own car park or on the road outside the pub. Well done.”
