About Smugglers Restaurant

Smugglers Restaurant is a gastropub on High St in Pevensey, set in a 16th-century inn with oak beams and fires in both the bar and the restaurant. The village pub now operates as a restaurant, with a menu of starters, mains and desserts and different deals through the week. A lunchtime meal deal offers a starter and main, or three courses, for diners eating inside. Roast dinners come with roast potatoes and gravy. Reservations are required, and the meal deal is one to book ahead. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers return mostly for the weekday discount deals, especially the Monday and Tuesday lunch offers with discounted starters and desserts, and the generous roast. One diner describes crispy roast potatoes, tasty gravy and perfectly cooked meat, and another came back for Sunday roasts and a kids' roast that was a good size. Close behind are the starters and mains: garlic mushrooms with smoked cheese, prawn cocktail, sea bass in white wine sauce, and a meringue sundae with little lemon slices. Staff are repeatedly called friendly and efficient, and several mention good portions and a relaxed old-pub feel. The main complaint concerns the deals. One group arriving without a booking was told the place was full, then learned the meal deal applied only to indoor diners, so they left for another pub, and they also found the staff stressed. Another reviewer notes that tables sit quite close together, and several say booking well ahead is needed. One party of twenty after a funeral reported hot food and nobody left waiting.

“This was our second visit after we couldn't get into another restaurant locally which turned out to be a real bonus as the Smugglers was fantastic. We went on a Monday where you could get a starter and the main cause for £10, really good value and delicious food with excellent portions that really filled us up. The staff could not have been more helpful and really friendly . We were a group of four but I definitely will be coming back with my mum .”

“Just had a really superb meal, Amanda our waitress was brilliant very attentive and funny , she and all the staff made us feel very welcome. Very good value for money the deal they have on at the moment is free starter and dessert with every meal , plenty on the menu to choose from , looking forward to going back , thanks to everyone and especially Amanda for making our evening an enjoyable one .”

“20 of us for lunch after my Dads funeral. Lovely food and great service. Nobody was left waiting and food nice and hot. Great choices of drinks and menu. Reasonably priced with outside garden space and plenty of parking”

“Unfortunate. We arrived to have the deal - 2 meals for £10 and was told the place was full and we had to have booked. That’s ok/understandable. We were told there was seating outside in the back area/garden area. We sit down, go to the hatch to order but then told that the meal deal is only valid for customers who eat inside the place… not for us who have no choice but to eat outside. Not wheelchair accessible either and we had to open the double doors ourselves to try to get my mother (with her walker) inside. We went to the pub down the road instead. Staff seemed stressed and not able to manage a Monday lunch session. No info online that warns about different prices for inside/outside dining. Just disappointing but having now read the negative reviews on food quality I’m glad we skipped it. Thank you universe!”

“We came to this village to visit the castle. We took a short walk into the village and decided to pop in and have a bite to eat. The special offers they had on at that time of day was amazing. All of the food was tasty and of a good size. It's a lovely old pub and we felt very relaxed. The staff were polite and friendly. The final bill was so low. I will definitely visit again.”
