About Harrison's Fish & Chips

Harrison's Fish & Chips is a takeout restaurant at 6 Elms Parade in Oxford, where customers choose from a range of fish that includes Cornish cod and Cornish haddock. The source of each fish is labelled, and a guide board sits alongside a specials board, listing what is available with notes on firmness and taste so customers can pick the fish that suits them. The fish is fried in a thin batter and served with thick-cut chips in large portions, with homemade tartare sauce on the side. For something different, the cheese box combines battered halloumi, mozzarella sticks and macaroni cheese bites, and battered sausage is also on the menu. The shop works on a walk-in basis, with no reservations. Both card and cash are accepted.

Customer Review Summary

Diners most often praise the haddock and cod, with a light, thin, crispy batter that one reviewer compares to tempura. Cornish haddock and large Cornish cod are singled out for their thickness and freshness, and several note the clearly labelled fish selection showing source, firmness and taste. Close behind are the chips, described as thick-cut, fluffy and generous, and the mushy peas, called rich and not watery. Others mention the cheese box of battered halloumi, mozzarella sticks and macaroni cheese bites, and the battered sausage. Staff are repeatedly called friendly, polite and courteous, and one reviewer calls the shop spotless. The chips also draw the main complaint. One reviewer found them black, rubbery and inedible, another disliked the thin, hard slices, and a third says chips left in the heat bin turn drier. The homemade tartare sauce is a recurring highlight, and one pair of diners went back for seconds.

“I can see why Harrison’s are considered the number 1 chippy in Oxford! Definitely deserving of the awards! I tried the cheese box (battered halloumi, mozzarella sticks and macaroni cheese bites). All of it was good, the mozz and mac would have been a big miss at most takeaway joints so it was refreshing to get decent ones here! Not many chippies do battered halloumi at all never mind good ones (I only know of one other in Oxon nearer to me), so that also wins brownie points with me Service was good, premises well maintained. Can’t fault it really. Already planning another visit soon to try something fish based - question is… do I go for my traditional fish burger? Or try one of the more exotic choice of fish on offer such as the NZ or Norwegian ones? 🤔 something you don’t usually see in British chippies! Even the Cornish variety on offer is huge and I know nothing beyond cod, haddock and plaice! So I’ll definitely need to ask the staff to guide me. Something I can be assured they’re experts at, based on my own observations and other people’s reviews Following this glowing review I gave, I have now recommended this place to a few of my friends Keep up the good work!”

“The batter is the best I’ve ever had. Impressed by the fish selection - I didn’t notice the specials board til after I’d ordered my haddock, but I’ll look out for it next time. Not too long of a wait and pretty good value for money in this day and age.”

“Called in tonight for chips and thought I'd go for some fish as well. The last time I had "chip shop fish" (not here), the batter was so thick and greasy that I had to leave half and felt nauseous so I was in two minds about it. I didn't need to worry though because the haddock was the best I've ever tasted, absolutely beautiful. The batter was light thin, crispy and VERY edible and not a scrap left in the box! Almost tempura in style. Clear guide shows the fish available along with firmness and tastes, great idea and I might try, out some others. Courteous staff too!”
