About Lula's Ethiopian and Eritrean Cuisine Restaurant Ltd
Lula's Ethiopian and Eritrean Cuisine Restaurant Ltd is an Ethiopian restaurant at 21 Park End St in Oxford, across the road from Oxford railway station. The family-owned kitchen cooks Ethiopian and Eritrean dishes from scratch, and the menu includes vegetarian and vegan platters. Sharing platters come for two, with a larger one for three, and arrive with injera, the flatbread used to scoop up the food by hand. A knife and fork are also on hand. Spicy chicken is part of the sharing platter, alongside sides such as lentils. The drinks list features Ethiopian honey wine, both sweet and dry, and date mead. Ethiopian and Eritrean coffee is served as a Buna shot, which makes a natural way to finish a meal. Desserts include vegan options and a gluten-free cake. The restaurant opens Tuesday to Saturday and closes on Mondays and Sundays.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often point to the sharing platters, with the spicy chicken singled out as the star of one and the vegetarian and vegan platters praised as huge and delicious. Close behind are the Ethiopian honey wine, offered sweet or dry, and the coffee, including the Buna, which one reviewer likens to espresso. Others mention the Enqual Tibs egg scramble served on injera for a gluten allergy, the vegan desserts and the gluten-free cake. Service is described as welcoming, with staff explaining dishes and one server pouring tasters of the wine. Portions are called generous enough to take leftovers home, and the decor, books and live jazz on one evening add to the atmosphere. The one clear complaint comes from a two-star reviewer who received spicy chicken served cold, a too-salty chickpea and lentil sauce, mushy beans and spices that did not harmonize with the injera. One other reviewer found the incense a problem because of scent sensitivity. Several note the short walk from the railway station, and one family group of nine says they were incredibly looked after.

“Delicious food, with welcoming and attentive service. I'd never tried Ethiopian food before and they explained to us what each of the options on the menu would be like, how it's traditionally eaten, etc. The server even gave us a taste of the two types of Ethiopian honey wine they offer, sweet and dry, so we could decide which one we wanted - both were delicious, but we preferred the dry. We got a sharing platter for 2 with their spicy chicken. It came with these large (gluten-free; I'm not sure what the grain is that the flour comes from, I'm sure it's on the menu though, I just forgot!) savoury pancakes so that you can scoop it up and eat with your hands, but there's also a knife and fork if you prefer. The side dishes on the platter were two kinds of lentils, beetroot with potato, and potato with other veggies (cabbage, carrot, red pepper...) and all were amazing, but the chicken was definitely the star of the show. The restaurant also has a really cool atmosphere, the decorations are beautiful and they have some shelves of fiction and non-fiction books about Africa, and the building is also host to the Oxford Poetry Library. The food was so good, we stuffed ourselves full and had to ask them for to-go boxes for the leftovers! So yes, portion sizes are excellent and generous. I also had a shot of their specialty Ethiopian coffee (forgot the name, sorry!) after eating and it was delicious as well, a nice smooth taste. We'll definitely be coming again to try out the date mead and the lamb platter. I highly recommend it to everyone!”

“We followed the smell down the street, and I'm glad we did! The food was delicious, and the honey wine was a perfect addition. The menu was so clear—it was my easiest ordering experience in an authentic restaurant. The platter size was so satisfying. The location and quick preparation were so convenient and gave us plenty of time to enjoy our meal and wine without any rush for the train. Considering restaurants location, they should advertise how fast their service is. We were almost going to the dominos near them just because of the rush 😊”

“Having travelled extensively in both Ethiopia and Eritrea, I found Lula’s to be a remarkably authentic representation of the Horn of Africa. The food reflects the flavours and traditions of the region, while the décor and atmosphere create a genuine sense of place. The selection of Ethiopian and Eritrean coffee, beverages and desserts is particularly good, and everything was served with care and attention. The service was warm, efficient and welcoming throughout. A very enjoyable experience and, in my view, one of the more authentic Horn of Africa dining experiences available in Oxford. Thank you. Excellent service by Claire.”

“Nine of us went as a family on a Friday afternoon. We were incredibly looked after and the food was fantastic and plenty of it. All good wholesome stuff full of flavour. Lovely cold beers as well. Totally fab.”

“Was looking forward to trying Ethiopian cuisine and it did not disappoint! My only regret is only being able to come here once and for breakfast. I would love to try the dinner/lunch menu! Had the Enqual Tibs and it’s essentially a really good egg scramble. I got it with the injera bread since I have a gluten allergy and that was safest. This place is so accommodating with that and the food was excellent! I also had the Buna coffee and it was similar to espresso and perfect to start the day with. Can’t wait to come back one day!”
