About The Gardeners Arms

In Jericho, a short walk from Oxford centre, The Gardeners Arms is a fully vegetarian pub at 39 Plantation Rd. Vegan food runs throughout the menu, so plant-based diners can order across the whole list, from a vegan katsu curry to a mushroom pie with gravy. At the bar, a vegan pale ale is on tap, and a spritz menu sits alongside the beer. The interior is small, with old-style seating. Payment is by card only.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers return above all for the vegan and vegetarian food, with the mushroom pie and its gravy singled out as the standout, and the vegan katsu curry, vegan chicken Caesar salad and a burger with chips and garlic bread also named. Several note the generous portions, the huge choice for vegans and the ease of ordering anything from the menu. Close behind come the friendly bartenders and waitstaff, the garden seating and the atmospheric interior, plus a reasonably priced spritz menu and a good range of beer. The main complaints are practical. One diner booked for 4:30pm and learned the kitchen opens at 5, which was not mentioned when booking, and also found the pub is card only with no notice of it. Another wanted more vegan real ale than the single pale ale on tap, and one said the katsu curry rice tasted more Indian than Japanese. Some mention the small size, with walk-ins struggling to find a table. One diner arriving early had the chefs start cooking before 5pm.

“Had a relaxing Sunday lunch here today - and fantastic it was all vegetarian. The vegan katsu curry was delicious, even if the rice felt more like Indian than Japanese. The waffle with ice-cream was enjoyable. The garden was comfortable to take much lunch al fresco on a warm day.”

“I went here with my family this evening for a meal. The pub itself looks a bit tired from the outside but once you’re inside it is quite ‘hipster’ vibe and cool. The service was great, not over bearing, just right and really friendly. The food was great, if you fancy a naughty burger and chips and some garlic bread it’s a great place. Fairly priced, good selection of vegan meals and it’s nice being able to choose anything you want from the menu. We booked our table for 4:30pm to be told the kitchen doesn’t open until 5 which it doesn’t mention anywhere when booking so as we arrived early we did have to wait a little while but the garden area is nice so it wasn’t too bad at all and in fairness to the chefs they did start cooking our food before 5pm which was very kind and unexpected. Just be aware that the restaurant is card only which I also didn’t see displayed anywhere or see online anywhere. Overall, a great experience, food was faultless, service was great and even the area the pub is in is fairly quiet and you don’t feel like you’re in the middle of a city. I would definitely return if I was in the area again. A bit of a hidden gem.”

“What a wonderful find in Jericho!!! A fully vegetarian/vegan english pub- it was so lovely to have that classic vibe and feeling but know everything was plant based. Truly a beautiful spot, lovely charming interior and an awesome garden area with seating outside. It felt clean and cozy- perfect spot for dinner and drinks with friends. The service was top notch and the bartenders and waitstaff were all so kind, laughing and cracking jokes and making us feel right at home. I would definitely go back here, we had such a nice evening 🩵 Don’t miss this spot!!!”
