Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often point to the cheap, good-value drinks and food at this central Oxford Wetherspoons, with a wide selection of beers and fast service at the sizable bar. Breakfast draws specific praise, including the Large Breakfast, Bacon Sandwich, Eggs Benedict, Fruit & Yoghurt and the hot drink refills. Close behind, some enjoy watching football on the screens, and one calls the air con great on hot days. Several describe it as noisy, crowded and cramped at times, busiest on Friday and Saturday nights, and one says it sometimes lacks a traditional pub atmosphere. The sharpest complaints concern handling of problems. One diner paid full price for a Large Breakfast that arrived without bacon and mushrooms, and was refused an extra sausage or egg instead. Another received burnt festive sharer fries missing cranberry sauce and was first told no refund was possible, with the manager described as rude until the chef agreed to one. A third found the air con switched off on a hot day because staff sitting beneath it wanted it that way. Cleanliness opinions split, with some praising clean tables and toilets and one saying tables are not cleaned often.

“Very disappointing experience at The Four Candles. We ordered a Large Breakfast, but it arrived without both the bacon and mushrooms. Staff told us they were unavailable because of a fridge problem and that a notice had been put on the pub door. However, there was no warning on the menu or when we actually ordered, so we paid the full price without being told that two items were missing. We politely asked if they could substitute an extra sausage or egg for the missing items, which seemed perfectly reasonable, but they refused. What made the experience worse was the attitude of the female member of staff at the counter, who was particularly unfriendly and dismissive when we tried to explain the problem. We also tried to raise the issue with the manager, but no reasonable solution was offered. I completely understand that equipment can break and ingredients can run out, but customers should be told clearly before ordering. If two items from a breakfast are unavailable, offering a simple substitute shouldn’t be difficult. Very poor handling of what should have been an easy problem to resolve.”

“A nice Wetherspoons in the centre of Oxford. Can get extremely busy on Friday/Saturday nights with a more lively atmosphere. Wide selection of drinks and really good prices. There are much nicer independent pubs nearby, but you will be paying more. The Four Candles is a perfectly fine Spoons.”

“It's a very hot day and yet the air con was switched off. Asked for it to be turned on and was told that they could not turn it back on as other people had asked for it to be off. The other people on question were employees, sitting directly underneath it. I thought customers were supposed to come first? They could have sat elsewhere. Food was lovely and no complaints there, but I did not appreciate sitting in the warm and sweating whilst trying to enjoy my drinks.”

“As close to a dive bar i got to in the central Oxford. Noisy, crowded, open later than most places so the end-of-evening crowd navigate here. Friendly and fast service on the sizable bar, reasonably cheap too.”

“This is one of the smaller pubs in the chain but it is a great option for a relaxing drink. There’s a good mix of tables on the ground floor with a decent number of screens around if you want to see the news. Upstairs there are some more relaxing tables, although everywhere does feel a little cramped at times. Service at the bar is always fast and everywhere including the bathrooms is clean. A good option in the centre.”
