About Coast Restaurant
Coast Restaurant occupies a former bank building on George St in Oban, a setting that gives the dining room its scale and structure. The kitchen works in modern British and Scottish cooking, with local seafood, fish and meat dishes forming the core of the menu. Scallops and langoustines appear as recurring options, the latter sometimes served as a starter to share, alongside a butternut squash risotto. Venison features as a regular main course, and fish and chips stays on the menu with triple cooked chips as a side. Rhubarb ginger sponge turns up regularly among the desserts. The restaurant takes walk-ins rather than bookings, and it opens daily, with a bar running alongside the dining room.

“What a wonderful meal! Coast is a lovely restaurant with excellent service. The food was delicious and they have a very diverse menu that should appeal to everyone. We loved the Venison haunch and the Filet. The sticky toffee pudding …”

“The best meal we've had in ages. The young waiting on staff are a credit, the food was delicious and front of house very accommodating as I had messed up the booking! Also there is no music so the hum of conversation made a nice change ( along with a no dogs policy!) A visit to this restaurant is a must if you are in Oban & hopefully we can revisit some time.”

“Coast gets very good reviews and it was recommended by our airbnb host so we booked a table for 6pm for two on our last night in Oban. Husband's £11 starter of chicken liver parfait was straight out of the fridge and was therefore very cold. He had difficulty getting through the clarified butter. He thought it ok, but has had better. My £14.50 scallops (2 and a half) came with blackpudding, which had been diced into very small pieces. I reckon they wouldn't have amounted to a whole slice. The scallops were cooked beautifully but lacked any seasoning. There was (allegedly) a carrot salad which consisted of two very small shavings among green leaves which had an over abundance of sherry dressing which was unpleasant. Husband's £30 venison came with 2 small hasselback potatoes, leeks and green beans. The advertised crispy onions weren't there. The red wine jus was so-so. The venison was beautifully cooked. The potatoes lacked seasoning. I had a main course (£34) of chargrilled local split langoustines with garlic butter and mixed leaves. I opted for triple cooked chips instead of boiled potatoes. The langoustines were nicely cooked but lacked any seasoning. The plate was swimming in butter, as was the salad that sat on top of it. The chips were really dry and tasteless despite my putting salt on them We shared a dessert (£8.50) of warm poached rhubarb with ginger sponge and nutmeg icecream. It was superb! Best course of the night. Including a £29.50 bottle of very good white wine, and a £6.50 glass of red the bill came to £134 We were allocated a two hour slot, which is perfectly adequate if you just want to eat and go. The service reflected the time restriction... it felt hurried, and whilst not offensive was perfunctory. The restaurant itself is nicely decorated but soulless. When paying by card you're given the option of pressing a button to leave a tip... 10%, 20%, etc. We left 0%. Ordinarily we might have opted for some more wine or a digestif, and a cheese course but the limited time allocation doesn't allow for that. We didn't feel it a very relaxing dinner when you're having to check your watch. Overall we found the food underwhelming. Decently cooked but bland in too many places. We wouldn't go back.”

Customer Review Summary
The main complaint is value and seasoning. Reviewers describe small portions, including two small pieces of venison and a small butternut squash risotto starter. One diner found the scallops, langoustines and potatoes under-seasoned, with dry chips and a very cold chicken liver parfait. Another reports cold supermarket bread, a chocolate tartin that seemed long refrigerated and a rhubarb cake reheated in a microwave. One couple felt hurried by a two hour table slot and described the room as soulless. Others like the lack of background music, and several suggest booking ahead, with one reviewer noting walk-ins turned away at the door.
