About Ye Olde Salutation Inn

Ye Olde Salutation Inn is a 13th century pub on Hounds Gate in Nottingham, built on top of Anglo-Saxon caves that still run underneath it. Dark wooden beams run through the old interior, which spreads across multiple floors and rooms with snugs, nooks and differing floor levels. The bar serves local Castle Rock beers alongside mead and a range of spirits, and each beer comes in a glass bearing its name. The food menu includes the Hellfire Burger, chicken tenders and scampi and chips, with sweet potato fries on the side. Rock music sets the tone for a biker and heavy metal following, and a jukebox adds to the playlist. Upstairs, a music venue offers places to sit and stand. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often single out the beer selection, naming Castle Rock Pale Ale and local ales, with pints served in glasses bearing the beer's name. Close behind is the rock and heavy metal biker identity, with a music venue upstairs, a jukebox covering nearly every genre, and Fleetwood Mac, Status Quo and Rammstein playing at the bar. Several describe the building's age and character, with differing floor levels, dark beams and snugs that look straight from the 1200s, and one mentions a ghost tour visit to the cave beneath. Food gets praise too, including the Hellfire Burger with finely chopped jalapeños, sweet potato fries, a toasted cheese sandwich, chicken tenders and scampi and chips. Staff are called friendly and welcoming. One reviewer rated the visit low, citing clientele that made the place less appealing and basic toilets with broken glass in the toilet itself. Another noted the bar checked a freshly changed beer before serving, and the pint turned out very nice.

“My first visit to this very distinctive pub, and I was very impressed. It combines the historical with the modern (great aircon !) and drinks are reasonably priced. I liked the music venue upstairs, which had various places to sit and stand. Nice people too, and I really appreciated their quick response to my Messenger message asking for the bands' stage times. Highly recommended !”

“It is a fun place to visit. There is a lot of history and the food was really good, especially for a pub!”

“Friendly, great selection of beers, interesting nooks andd crannys - there seemed to be so many rooms in this pub, i wanted to be nosy but friend just wanted to sit down outside... bit of a hot day; they checked my beer first before serving which i was a bit perturbed by but he said theyd just changed it so wanted to check.. it was a very nice pint.. my mate had described it as a metal bikers pub; they were playing fleetwood mac when we passed on the way to the castle and status quo and a few other tunes id not heard for a while so were singing along until the rammstein .. it was a nice to pop in (i didnt ask about the caves much to my friends upset, she'd seen them and i just wanted beer and music)”

“Interesting place. Plenty of different drinks on offer. Music and ambiance is as expected for what it advertised itself as. Sadly some of the clientele makes this place less than appealing. Toilets are basic and used for more than they should be. Fecal ridden toilet brush in the sink and broken glass in the toilet itself. Can't comment on food as we didn't order any.”
