About Belgian Monk
The Belgian Monk is a Belgian bar and restaurant at 7 Pottergate in Norwich, open since December 2000. The drinks list carries a regular selection of some 45 beers, with craft beers and a separate selection of special beers alongside. In the kitchen, mussels are offered several ways on the menu, and food comes with French fries. The interior is dark wood and refectory-style, with the bar at the bottom of the main stairs. Bookings are taken for dinner. Wursty Four Biers Ltd now owns and runs the venue.

Customer Review Summary
Mussels are the clear draw, ordered repeatedly by visitors, one of whom calls them an annual tradition and another describes them as a bowl served with crispy bread for the sauce. Close behind is the beer selection, with reviewers praising the cherry beer, a light zesty Bavic, and staff who know the beers well. Others mention crispy pork belly with stoemp and red cabbage, cod with fries, and a dark wood refectory feel, a good atmosphere and a beer garden. Several suggest the mussels and cherry beer specifically. The sharpest complaint comes from one reviewer whose Saturday booking was met with being ignored at a quiet bar, two draught beers that were off, a tasteless mushroom parfait on stale bread, a mushy tartiflette, and mains arriving as cutlery went down, which the server owned up to. A fifty percent discount on one starter was the only gesture. Smaller notes include dishes described as coming in a cob loaf but arriving in a bowl with bread on the side, and toilets that could be looked after better.

“Can only comment on the drink and atmosphere although looking at others food it looked great. Came here while passing some time waiting for our lift home. We would never normally just have a drink in the city but we had some time to waste so came in on the off chance. The staff were very welcoming and the drinks were lovely. Nice atmosphere and great little beer garden for the middle of the city.”

“Great atmosphere, excellent selection of craft beers, and friendly staff. The beer was fresh, full of flavor, and served at the perfect temperature. A fantastic place to relax with friends and enjoy quality food and drinks. Highly recommended—I’ll definitely be back! 🍻”

“We’ve been here for dinner while in Norwich, there’s a very nice atmosphere and a large selection of beers. Moules (mussels) recommended”

“It was my first time back in about 5 years and it never disappoints. With a recommendation on this hot day I went for a Bavic which a light zesty beer (perfect) along with a bowl of their mussels . As always the staff have an excellent knowledge of the beers and super helpful. Once again another fantastic experience at the Belgian Monk.”

“Through the door, dark wood refectory vibe. We’d booked for dinner but were sat in the bar, at the bottom of the main stairs. It turned out there was a big and boozy group in the restaurant. We soon forgot about the people coming and going as we looked over the menu. A lot of deliciously described choices. I started with mussels; the menu offered them a variety of ways. Then on to an irresistible crispy pork belly with smooth stoemp and sweet red cabbage. Hearty comfort food with beer offering half the seasoning. We felt welcomed when we arrived and cheerful when we left. London lost Belgo, Cheltenham its own Monk. This one thrives in Norwich.”

“The Belgian Monk opened in December 2000. The main objective was to create something different yet to fit in with the way drinking and dining is changing. It has become a successful and established bar and restaurant, offering customers a choice of a regular selection of some 45 beers together with a selection of special beers. The menu is based on serving only the best products available freshly prepared daily, at realistic prices, in an informal relaxed "friends and family" atmosphere. It provides more than just the meal or drink but a whole Belgian experience. Now owned and run by Wursty Four Biers Ltd the new owners hope to take this fantastic venue to new heights and enhance the service style and offer. Sincerely not to be missed!”
