About Moji Restaurant & Karaoke 蜀南春

Moji Restaurant & Karaoke 蜀南春 pairs a Chinese restaurant with an attached karaoke nightclub under neon lighting, on Newcastle Fireplace Centre in Newcastle Upon Tyne, so an evening meal can carry straight on into singing. The kitchen works in a Sichuan style, and the menu is a long one, with a photograph beside every dish and a number attached to each, so an order can be placed by number alone. Fried rice, including a vegetable version, runs through the list, and chips with curry sauce sit alongside the Chinese plates. For anyone eating off site, the kitchen handles takeaway at the counter and sends orders out through Just Eat and Uber Eats. The doors open daily, and booking ahead is advised for a table. The dining room itself sits above the street entrance, reached by a staircase.

Customer Review Summary

Sichuan cooking anchors the praise here, and the fried rice comes up most, hot from the wok in one account and ordered alongside beef in black bean sauce in another. Close behind are big portions and value, with reviewers singling out the stir-fried duck with mushroom, the beef brisket soup, a large Fu Yong Dan omelette and chilli and pepper tofu built on Sichuan peppercorns. One visitor from Spain calls the noodles the best food tried in the UK and notes the illustrated menu with a picture of every dish. Several describe the service as friendly and the food as arriving fast. Delivery draws the sharper complaints: one order came with overcooked duck spring rolls and chicken dishes described as all coating and rock hard, while another found the Wind and Sand lamb ribs too fatty and the rub so heavy it felt like eating dry sand. A group whose Christmas dinner booking did not include karaoke declined the hourly charge and left; one regular suggests dining in rather than ordering takeaway.

“Located in probably the worst area of Newcastle. Our group Xmas dinner was a private occasion, surprised that no other customers were around. The food was adequate, nothing major. I was lead to believe the karaoke was included when booking the large group dinner, but they insisted on charging 30 pounds per hour. We kindly declined and moved to a more atmospheric environment. It is unlikely we will be returning to this restaurant.”

“This restaurant has a wide variety of Sichuan cuisine. I like the taste here very much and it reminds me of the food I ate when I traveled to China! The food here tastes great, very authentic and the ingredients are very fresh!”
  • Mya Thandar Htay
“The service was speedy and friendly. The food came so fast. All tasty and fresh. Great portion with reasonable price.”
  • Changnian Jiang
“A very good dinner. The fried chicken and poached fish are both very tasty and reasonably priced. The service is very friendly and will come often.”
  • Dan Stryker
“Pleasant place which is never crowded and always serving great value-for money food! Just tried this delicious Stir-fried Duck with mushroom dish #372 and it was savory. I also love their beef brisket soup. My go-to Chinese restaurant when I'm famished because they have big portions!”
