Quick info
About Saltwater Fish Company
Saltwater Fish Company is a fish and seafood restaurant in Newcastle Upon Tyne, set inside the Fenwick Food Hall of the Fenwick department store. It works as a fish bar and a fishmonger in one, so the fish on the wet fish counter is the same fish the kitchen cooks, and guests can either eat at the bar or buy fish to cook at home. The bar seats 19 on high stools around an open kitchen. Oysters are named by their origin, and a blackboard carries the daily specials. French-style Fruits de Mer Platters are made for sharing. The restaurant is open daily, and its website lists menus and last order times.

Customer Review Summary
Oysters are the main draw, described as fresh and local, with the happy hour Lindisfarne oysters called a great deal, though one reviewer found them salty and thought a chilli and crispy shallots special was meh. Close behind is the fish. Reviewers praise the hake as thick, seasoned and juicy, though one found it a bit salty. Others name grilled halibut, plaice on a seafood broth, prawns with mustard mayonnaise, crab on toast, scallop and sea bass. One diner found the salmon overcooked. Service earns warm comments, including a server who gave recommendations and let a group linger over several courses with no pressure. The recurring complaints concern the setting. Reviewers call the counter seats and high stools awkward and say they disrupt the dining atmosphere, and one notes the lack of natural light. One reviewer was refused a table at 6PM because the kitchen had closed, even though the venue advertised an 8PM closing time, though they found the staff nice in how it was conveyed.

“If you advertise 8PM closing times you should not reject seating at 6PM "as the kitchen closed". 2 hours advance of closing of kitchen before closing hours is ridiculous, most people get dinner at 6PM, hence i dont get the logic. 7:30 would be considerablefor a station breakdown. Although the staff was pretty nice in the way it was conveyed”

“My boyfriend and I have visited twice recently and had the most amazing experience. The food is outstanding but we’d like to pay particular high praise to the wonderful Jade. She is truly a remarkable young lady. She is so much fun, very engaging and just a real credit to you.”

“Small intimate food bar kind of a place... Great food and among everything I had only the salmon was overcooked to my liking... However everything else were amazing (oyster, crab on toast, scallop, sea bass)”

“A fabulous seafood restaurant in Fenwick's Food Hall. The service was excellent. We sat on high stools around a bar and enjoyed excellent prawns with mustard mayonnaise, plaice on a seafood broth and a grilled halibut fillet. The fish was cooked to perfection and really can't be faulted. Nice wine list and plenty of water. Highly recommend.”
