About Kaltur Wine Bar & Restaurant

Kaltur Wine Bar & Restaurant is a Spanish tapas restaurant at 19 Dean St in Newcastle Upon Tyne, open daily. Counter seating puts diners next to the chef, who talks them through the Spanish tapas. The wine list notes which regions of Spain each wine comes from, and the team explains menu ingredients and wine origins at the table. Dishes come as small plates, including North Shields cod tempura with lentils and slow roasted pork belly. Vegetarian options are available, and the kitchen adjusts dishes for allergies, with staff asking about allergens and dietary needs. The menu also includes stews with white beans.

“This was our first visit to this fabulous Tapas restaurant. What a superb restaurant, the ambiance from the minute you walked in ,Su was smiling ,happy to welcome you and find you a table. Once sat all the other restaurant clients were recommending dishes and saying how we will enjoy our meal and it certainly didn’t disappoint . I have lots of allergies dairy, pork, tomatoes and all were accommodated by Daniel the expert Chef with Su’s expert advice on menu choices which made this meal for me such a pleasurable experience . Each dish was beautiful prepared with adjustments and absolutely delicious . Friendly, fabulous hospitality, such a great find we would highly recommend or should we keep it a secret as we will certainly be back regularly thanks so much for such a wonderful Thursday date night Su Daniel and the rest of the staff at Kaltur Dene street .”

“This is the worst place where I have been in New Catsle. The waitress was not nice. No child food ! They served all the adults in the restaurant and in the end a 9 years old girl although we arrived before everybody. The waitress laughed while ordering the plate of my daughter to the chef just cause I asked to have a simple steak and salad. It’s not a place for children or simply friendly! What a sad place ! The food : in the stews there were white beans Be Carefull you need them cause the portion are very smalll ! Don’t go there ! If you like Indian go to SIMLA! Absolutely good food and nice people.”

“Worst restaurant experience I’ve had in my life! Visited Kaltur on 26/04/2026 after a local friend recommended it. Sadly, both the food and service were very disappointing. We were seated at a table with a dirty wine glass covered in greasy fingerprints. When I asked for a replacement, the waiter inspected it first instead of simply apologising and changing it. As a first-time tapas customer, I asked for a quick explanation of the menu, but the waiter was dismissive and unhelpful saying things like "Well it's tapas, we usually recommend 2-3 dishes per person. It is tapas haha". We were also asked about allergens three separate times during a 47-minute visit, which felt disorganised rather than attentive. Food arrived in the wrong order (mains before starter), and most dishes lacked quality or flavour. The tortilla was unbearably salty, the garlic prawns tasted frozen and bland, the bread was dry, the padron peppers tasteless, and the sangria was overly sweet like fruit juice. Only the olives were enjoyable. Going back to the service issues: After quickly finishing our food we requested the bill. The waiter asked us whether he can take the plates, to which we explicitly said that he can take everything except for one plate from which I was still eating. He then proceeded on interrupting me and my friend 2 times, by asking whether he can take some of the plates. Now, part of waiters’ etiquette is to know when to interrupt a conversation and when not. It was extremely uncomfortable to be asked the same thing 3 times (as it happened with the allergens question), after you have been explicitly told what can be taken from the table and what not. Worse part: The bill comes, and I see a charge of 7.40 for a ‘Service Fee’. Now I am not from the UK, so naturally I did not know what this meant. So I asked the waiter: “I am not a local, could you please explain what the service fee is”. His facial expression indicated he was extremely surprised by the question, and his answer (similar to that about the tapas question) was “Well it’s a service fee, ser-vi-ce fee (pointing at himself).” And I asked: “Well isn’t that supposed to be included in the price I pay for the whole restaurant experience?”. To which the waiter proceeded on explaining that ‘Service Fee’ is a widely known practice in ALL restaurants in the UK (lie, I’ve been in London many times and never had been charged for such a thing), and that this fee is optional, so if I do not want to pay that is fine. To which I requested that I indeed do not pay. He later returned with a new bill, without the Service Fee, and when handing it to me he asked me “Do you know what the word ‘tips’ means?” I reply “Yes, but what has that to do with service fee?”. He replies: “Well it’s the same?”. And I just replied “Excuse me but isn’t tips something that I decide to pay you, myself, if I am happy with the service?”. After he just started overexplaining, my friend had to interfere, because obviously the waiter did not have proper training, to know that when a customer requests something (even if that is not profitable for the establishment) they should just complete the request, without attacking the customer. Because surely those customers will never return again. After paying the waiter disappeared in the kitchen, and so nobody even greeted us goodbye upon leaving. Poor food, poor service, inflated prices, and very unprofessional staff behaviour. Would not return and would not recommend.”

“As someone who recently returned from vacation in Madrid and Barcelone, this place exceeded my expectations on the variety and the taste of their tapas.lots of options for vegetariona and other spcial dietary rwstrictions. We sampled at least 10 different dishes and each one of them was made fresh and very good.Very warm, knowledgeable and helpful service. Nice and cozy environment. Great for small groups dinners.”

“Visited during Restaurant Week and had a great experience. The food was absolutely delicious with lots of choice, the vintage wine was lovely, and the service was friendly and efficient. The atmosphere was cosy but still had a nice buzz. We especially loved the North Shields cod tempura with lentils. Would definitely come back!”

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often praise the tapas, with cod singled out, whether as tempura with lentils or alongside scallops and pork. Diners also name the slow roasted pork belly and a lovely Albariño, and several describe an extensive wine list with the Spanish regions explained. Staff earn warm remarks for explaining ingredients, handling allergies and vegetarian needs, and chatting about the food. The cosy room has a nice buzz, though one reviewer notes slightly slow service when the restaurant was short staffed. Complaints are sharper. Two reviewers object to the service charge, and one says it would not be taken off. Portions are called small, with one diner expecting to be hungry later. One reviewer describes a dirty glass, a salty tortilla, bland garlic prawns and mains arriving before the starter, and another says a child's order came last. One diner's bill was reissued without the service charge after a lengthy exchange with the waiter.
