Customer Review Summary
Beef rendang is the dish reviewers name most, praised as flavourful and spicy, with one reviewer calling the duck version unbelievable. Close behind are the kueh teow goreng, roti canai with its well-balanced curry sauce, and the curry lamb and slow-cooked beef. Salt and chilli prawns and the Malaysian milk tea also get mentions. Food consistently arrives quickly even when the room is packed, and staff are repeatedly described as friendly. The most detailed complaints are about specific dishes: the laksa was rich but too salty, the Hainanese chicken rice had tough chicken, and the nasi goreng had raw mushrooms and heavy seasoning. One reviewer found the nasi lemak different from what they had tried in Malaysia. A few mention the small room being busy, one says it felt cold whenever the door opened, and another notes limited alcoholic drinks and that bringing your own is no longer allowed. One reviewer was charged for a takeaway container after not finishing their soup.

“This is a very high-quality Malaysian fusion restaurant. The dishes offered are relatively authentic, and the sauces are very unique, unlike typical British restaurants. First, their slow-cooked beef is excellent; the meat is very tender, flavorful, and spicy – I personally loved it, and it's arguably the restaurant's signature dish. The curry lamb is also outstanding; the curry flavor is very special, incredibly fragrant, and the spicy spices are quite different from ordinary curry. Curry lovers will definitely enjoy it. The laksa soup is rich and flavorful, but I found it a bit too salty, and it got a little stale after a while; the portion size was also good. Finally, the Hainanese chicken rice sauce was above average, but unfortunately, the chicken was rather tough and not tender, and the rice itself wasn't particularly special – this is not recommended. As for drinks, the Malaysian milk tea is good; first-timers might want to try it.”

“If you are an Indonesian, this place offers various food that taste like home too..😋 Honestly, I could not recommend this place enough. My partner and I ordered the king prawn you tiao - which are delicate, light and the prawn feels fresh. Then, the beef rendang, for Indonesian, this does taste different than an Indonesian rendang but it is such a flavourful and the spices are just perfect. I would say it is more coconut-y and more spicy than a typical sweet rendang that has smooth sauces, and nothing wrong with that! What I love from our dishes we ordered, is the kueh teow goreng! I tell you what, this does taste like an Indonesian one! Just perfect combination of ingredients.. The meals portion are considerably more than enough for a woman that usually leave some of the plate for their partners! What is great about the service was, because we expect that we will get our orders later as we see the customers were PACKED, it came literally 7-10 minutes after we ordered. Very friendly and the staff knows the menu very well. Recommended for groups, as we see most of the customers are in groups. But if you are a couple that want an intimate kind of dinner, we don't really recommend as it was packed on a Friday night (not sure if you go on a weekday evening). Overall, highly recommended! 🥘”

“If you’re looking for authentic Malaysian flavours in Newcastle, Chilli Padi is definitely worth a visit. The place is small and always buzzing, but that actually adds to the whole atmosphere — you can feel the energy the moment you walk in. The standout here is absolutely the food. Everything we tried tasted authentic, rich in flavour, and clearly prepared with care. Their menu is packed with Malaysian favourites like beef rendang, roti canai, laksa, and char kway teow, and many people rave about how close the flavours are to the real thing. The food also arrives surprisingly quickly even when the restaurant is busy, which was impressive. Staff were friendly, attentive, and handled the crowd really well. The restaurant itself is compact but clean, including the washrooms, which is always appreciated in a busy place like this. Prices are reasonable for the quality, though slightly on the expensive side compared to similar casual spots — but honestly, the flavour makes up for it. The only thing that genuinely disappointed me was being charged for a takeaway soup container just because I couldn’t finish my soup. That felt a little unnecessary, especially after already paying premium prices for the meal. Still, overall, the food quality and authentic taste make this place stand out in Newcastle. If you enjoy proper Malaysian food with bold flavours and a lively atmosphere, Chilli Padi is absolutely worth trying.”
