Quick info
About Olive & Bean
Olive & Bean is a cafe in Newcastle Upon Tyne, at 17-19 Clayton St, serving coffee, breakfast, brunch and lunch. The cake selection is large, and the gluten free cakes sit together on their own shelves, so anyone avoiding gluten can find those options in one place. Lunch runs to toasties and sandwiches, along with soup and a half soup and sandwich combo. Seasonal drinks include a brûlée latte and a Bailey's hot chocolate, and the menu also covers afternoon teas, beers and wine. The seating area is small and split between an upstairs and a downstairs space. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary
Cakes draw the most attention, with reviewers praising the wide selection, including a gluten free Cherry Bakewell Blondie and a rich Biscoff Tiffin, alongside a brûlée latte described as fun. Coffee and sandwiches come next, with a half soup and sandwich combo called delicious and the brunch and lunch options described as well prepared. Staff are repeatedly called friendly and quick, and the atmosphere cozy and chilled. The criticism is concentrated in two lower reviews. They describe water slammed onto the table, a wrong order, soup that was barely warm, food arriving before drinks, a toastie with oversized mushroom pieces that spurted juice, and a sausage baguette holding a single sausage. One reviewer calls the toilets grubby, and another reports feeling ill after lunch. A few find the cake slices small for the price, and one notes a dry cake once. One gluten free reviewer says staff checked every ingredient in their hot chocolate and that the gluten free cakes sit on their own shelves.

“I used to love Olive and Bean but we had a poor experience about a year ago and first time back was poor again. Toilets are grubby and dirty. Staff tried their best but the food arrived before the drinks did. The soup was barely warm. I took it back and they said they’d fix it. I pointed out my toastie would then be cold. It was. Soup tasted nice. Son’s sausage baguette had one sausage in it. That’s not going to fill anyone. Staff said they were short staffed and they were pleasant but it fell short of the mark today. Sadly I don’t think we’ll be back.”

“How do I put this. Really not great this time. Waitress upstairs was unfriendly. She kinda just slammed our water down. I spilled my drink and when I asked for something to mop it up she kinda just threw the kitchen roll on the table instead of placing it. Also she got my partners order wrong. I really do not know why they dont write orders down if they cant remember them. My partner didnt want to kick up a fuss in case they tried to make his order again (slow waiting time to be served). No one asked me if everything was ok with my meal. My toastie was disappointing, the mushrooms could have been sliced smaller. Instead there were two mushroom halves cut in half, which meant when I bit into my toastie mushroom juice spurted and made a lot of mess. I felt really ill after eating here. Only giving it 2 stars because the cakes are really nice. But I wouldnt get lunch here ever again. Just overpriced, staff arent all pleasant and overall the food was average.”

“Been to this place for coffee, lunch, and some cake and honestly, it’s perfect. ☕🍰 The atmosphere is cozy, and the staff are incredibly friendly. Special shoutout to Sophie T and Heidi, who were so sweet, kind, and welcoming throughout. Will definitely be coming back!”

“Lovely cafe with great coffees and sandwiches. I recently had their half soup and sandwich combo which was simply delicious. They do a variety of cakes but I found them to be overpriced for the size of the slice you receive. Always found staff to be friendly and prompt”
