About The Fishpond

The Fishpond is a British restaurant and freehouse at 204 S Parade in Matlock, set into a limestone cliff-face and recently refurbished. Wood burners sit at either end of the large interior, which is divided into several seating areas. The kitchen serves a carvery and roast dinners alongside the rest of its British menu. Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often single out the food, led by the nacho sharer, which one diner calls the best pub nachos they have had, with a huge portion that stays loaded to the bottom. Close behind are the loaded fries, the halloumi burger, the Thai curry with sticky rice and crispy onions, and the bone marrow mash with its gravy. Others praise the carvery and Sunday roast, the steak, and gluten-free fish in crisp batter from a kitchen described as coeliac-friendly. The hog roast and evening buffet won over one wedding party, and the ballroom gave guests room when a storm hit. Drinks draw comment for an interesting range of beers and ciders, including special IPAs. The main complaint is how busy it gets. On a Valentine's evening, one couple waited an hour for a pizza and fish and chips, one meal arrived about twelve minutes after the other, and the loud room and a singer setting up behind them made it louder. They skipped dessert because their table was booked again. Staff are repeatedly called friendly, and one team put a candle on a birthday dessert and sang.

“So accommodating, booked a table for 1pm. Arrived after 1.30pm.. table was booked at 3pm but managed to swap us tables to have a dessert. Really enjoyable. Carvery meat was so impressive! Think this is a YNot Festival Sunday retreat for every year x”

“This is the one place we were able to get to a Sunday roast while in England and I'm glad it was here. The food was amazing, the staff were kind, and the location and biulding are gorgeous.”

“Came here for a suprise birthday. Really impressed with the food, service and atmosphere. There was live regee music from a really good performer, myself and my partner thought the steak was top notch. Wide selection of drinks including special IPA's. Staff ensured I had a candle on a dessert for my birthday and sang 'the song' 🤣 Would highly recommend.”

“A brilliant spot for great food in a scenic location. Reasonably priced as well for the quality you get. The drink selection was great too. Only downside is that it gets busy but that is just a side effect of a great place!”

“Booked for valentine's Day. Booking was easy. Pub has a pay carpark opposite. Very very busy pub we asked for our table but someone was sat at it however staff were brilliant asked people to move and cleaned table. We ordered but this is where it went a little wrong. Food took an hour to arrive just a pizza, fish and chips and a side. Had to ask how long food would be. Staff again were very friendly and explained we were next. My meal arrived shortly after but my girlfriends didn't this arrived around 12 minutes later not good at all. Pub was very busy and noisy not great for couple meal but not the pubs fault and pleased they were doing well. As we were eating the singer set up right behind us the entertainment was ok but made an already loud pub louder. Food was very good and can't fault. However we could not have desert as we could see our table was booked again for 8pm we only got food each at 7.45pm so didn't want to over run more than we had. In short nice but loud pub, great staff, great food but kitchen clearly couldn't cope.”

Good to know

“At the south end of this historic spa town and set into the limestone cliff-face this recently refurbished freehouse hasn't lost any of its traditional character or charm. Wood burners bookend the cavernous interior, adding to the congenial atmosphere and modern upmarket feel. There is a range of different seating areas, outside areas front & rear, justly popular with families and visitors to this inland resort town. The constantly changing selection of ales and ciders has a strong focus on LocAle, and is complemented by an interesting menu. Regularly hosts live music plus special events & Weddings.”
