About Catch 32

Catch 32 is a fish and chips takeaway at 32 Matlock St in Bakewell, with fish and kebabs both served from the one counter. The fish is cooked in vegetable oil, and the menu includes haddock and chips, with cod also offered as a fish option. A fishcake made with potato slices and fish in batter sits alongside it, and chips can come with curry sauce or gravy. On the kebab side, the mixed kebab combines meats and is served with salad and sauce, while chicken is available as a kebab, a pitta or a wrap. Orders can be paid for by cash or card.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often point to the fish and chips, especially thick, fresh haddock in a light, crispy batter alongside plentiful crispy chips. Close behind is the chicken kebab, described as loaded with meat, spicy seasoning and fresh salad, with a mixed kebab and chicken wrap also singled out. Several call the portions enormous, with one saving leftovers for breakfast, and others say the food was not oily, including a battered sausage that was crisp and light. The curry sauce and gravy get a mention too, and the owner and staff are repeatedly called friendly and welcoming. One reviewer dissents sharply, calling the haddock thin, pre-prepared and low on flavour, and finding the Irish curry watery and tasteless despite being told it was spicy. Another says the battered sausage had much thicker batter than the other items. Queues form daily, according to a visitor who stayed three days, and one diner describes the fishcake as two slices of potato with a slice of fish in the middle, wrapped in batter.

“Excellent quality fish and chips. Stayed in the area for 3 days and saw queues everyday here so knew it would good. The food was fresh and not oily at all. Great curry sauce too. Lovely owners too. Highly recommend.”

“After reading the reviews we expected very good quality. The prices are pretty good but the quality is very poor. The chips were quite nice (If you like them crispy) and so was the gravy, The Haddock must be frozen, pre prepared haddock as so thin and certainly not a lovely white and again certainly doesn't fall apart unaided and very little taste. I asked about the Irish curry as hadn't had it before, I was told it was spicy. It wasnt, it was like water and pretty tasteless! Don't read the reviews, watch a couple of YouTube videos that tell the truth!!!”

“What a lovely village. Incredible stonework, a clear stream, bridges, and a pleasure to visit. We parked in a pay-and-display car park just around the corner from Catch 32. On entering the shop, we were greeted with big smiles and a friendly welcome, which is always nice. The shop was very clean, tidy, and well-designed. I ordered haddock and chips, with the haddock being thick and fresh, served in a light, tasty, crispy batter. The chips were plentiful and deliciously crispy. Other items included a fishcake, built from two slices of potato with a slice of fish in the middle, wrapped in batter. The chicken pitta/kebab was brimming with fresh salad and plenty of tasty, spicy chicken. The battered sausage was nice too, although the batter was much thicker than on the other items. Overall, a friendly, well-presented shop in a beautiful village, serving fresh, enjoyable food with some excellent fish and chips. 🟠 Cooking in: Oil 🟠 Payment: Cash or Card 🟠 Fish Reviewed: Haddock 🎥 See the full video review on The Chippy Tour YouTube channel”

“Catch 32 absolutely nailed it. Piping hot fish with the crispiest batter, chunky chips that actually fill you up, and staff who treat you like a local. Portions are generous without being wasteful. Best chippy in Bakewell, hands down.”
