Quick info
About Sam's Chop House
Sam's Chop House is a chophouse restaurant on Back Pool Fold in Manchester, with a 140-year history and a connection to the artist LS Lowry, who once frequented it. A bronze seated statue of him sits at the bar, and photos of him are displayed around the pub. Old tiles and woodwork line the walls, and the lighting is dim. The menu includes a Barnsley chop among the mains, alongside corned beef hash and fish and chips made with a thick haddock fillet. The bar pours JW Lees beers, including the MPA, next to Boddingtons, a choice of cask ales and a wine cellar. A separate restaurant area sits alongside the bar. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary
Fish and chips draw the most mentions at Sam's Chop House, with reviewers describing a thick haddock fillet as outstanding and one diner calling it their first traditional English fish and chips. Close behind are the hearty mains: the Barnsley chop, the bacon chop, the blade of beef with cauliflower cheese, and the corned beef hash, which one diner recommends to anyone. Starters and sides get praise too, including a packed fishcake, a lamb and harissa scotch egg, marinated olives and a cheese board. The beer and wine side earns its own notes, with a well-kept pint of JW Lees MPA, Boddingtons, cask ales and a good wine cellar. Reviewers describe the old tiles, woodwork and dim lighting as cozy, and the bronze statue of LS Lowry at the bar and photos of him around the room come up repeatedly. Staff are called polite, friendly and quick, and a large group was easily accommodated. The one complaint is a single reviewer who found the fish and chips disappointing, saying the fish was fine but the batter was very hard and the crust unpleasant. One diner finished with the steamed lemon pudding, though they ran out of room before the end.

“The fish and chips were disappointing. The fish itself was fine, but the batter was very hard and the crust wasn’t particularly pleasant to eat.”

“I'd been so looking forward to have the fish and chips here again, and they didn't disappoint. A thick piece of haddock fillet, they were outstanding (£19.50) My mate was very happy with the blade of beef £24.50 and cauliflower cheese £6.50. A beer each , the bill with a discretionary service charge 10% came to £66.99, 2900 THB an expensive meal but a real treat. The service was exceptional and deserved the tip.”

“Sam's Chop House I had my first traditional English fish and chips here. My meal was excellent. I also had the marinated olives and prosecco. The service was great and our large group was easily accommodated. The atmosphere is absolutely old English Pub. The old wood work and dimly lighting make the atmosphere cozy I highly recommend this pub ☆☆☆☆☆”
