About Sambal

Sambal is a Malaysian restaurant and takeaway on Barlow Moor Rd in Manchester, serving both eat-in and collection. The menu runs from nasi lemak with chicken rendang to roti canai with chicken curry or dhal, alongside satay chicken with peanut sauce, with spice levels adjusted on request. Drinks include Sirup Bandung and Teh Tarik, and the restaurant operates as bring your own alcohol, with cups and wine glasses supplied for diners who bring their own bottle. A service charge is added to the bill, and this can be removed if asked. Booking ahead is recommended, since seating fills up quickly, particularly at weekends and in the evenings. It opens every day except Tuesdays. Parking on site is limited, though a few spaces sit outside the restaurant.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers consistently point to Sambal's roti canai with chicken curry as the standout, alongside other favorites like the nasi lemak with chicken rendang, satay chicken, and fish curry, all described as rich, fresh, and authentically Malaysian. Several also praise the char kway teow, sirup bandung, and teh tarik, with dishes customizable for spice level, and portion sizes are repeatedly called generous for the price. Close behind the food praise, though, is a recurring complaint about slow, understaffed service during busy periods, with diners describing mismatched course timing, ten-minute waits to flag down a server, and long queues without bookings, one family noted only two servers on a busy Saturday night, leaving sides going cold as mains trickled out unevenly. A few also object to the discretionary service charge when service falters. Despite this, several reviewers mention the owner personally checking on tables and, in one case, swapping out a dish that wasn't to a customer's taste at no charge.

“First time trying out Malaysian cuisine - i loved it! Went there on a monday evening and the place filled up super fast so prebook your table if you’re going with a group of 3 or more people, i think! Menu is pretty big and each dish is well detailed. The food itself is banging (we got 3 different dish mee goreng/nasi goreng/ and another one) and serving sizes are great. Definitely fill you up! Prices are good given the quality & food youre getting. Will defo be going back! (Put 3 stars for atmosphere because it can get pretty loud inside if the place is full)”

“We ordered the nasi lemak with chicken rendang, fish curry, and ayam goreng which were all really tasty. The chicken rendang was well seasoned and had a nice texture and the fish curry was incredible. The ayam goreng was nice and crispy but could have been a little bit more flavourful. Thankfully we had warm enough clothing as they had left the door open to let fresh air in but made the dining area quite cold which I could see made some customers feel chilly. The owner was quite friendly, making sure every table had what they ordered and also took time connecting with some of the guests and even offered to make one of the customer’s order on the house as it wasn’t to their taste. It felt like the person serving us though was rushing us as he was tapping his fingers by his leg when it came to paying the bill despite the restaurant not being busy. There were other customers still in the restaurant so it’s not like we were the last customers delaying them being able to close so I felt that was a tad bit of a let down. Anyway overall the food was good so it’s definitely a place I would like to go back to.”

“Absolutely loved our meal at Sambal! It’s one of Manchester’s best spots for authentic Malaysian flavors. The service was friendly and the place has a cozy, modern vibe. We ordered the Nasi Lemak with chicken rendang and the sambal was spot on – rich, spicy, and so fragrant. The Char Kway Teow had perfect wok hei and came loaded with prawns and chicken. My favorite was the Roti Canai with dhal and curry – flaky, crispy, and perfect for dipping. Portions are generous and the prices are fair for the quality you get. Finished with a Teh Tarik that was smooth and not too sweet. If you’re craving real Malaysian food in Manchester, Sambal is a must-try. Can’t wait to go back for their Laksa!”

“The food was delicious and very good value for money. The staff were so friendly and attentive, especially after I had a bit of a spill. There aren’t many seats, so it’s best to book in advance.”
