About Mary & Archie

On Manchester Rd, Mary & Archie runs as a pub and cafe serving updated pub food alongside a daily brunch, with vegan options included on the menu. Dishes include the aubergine burger, salt and pepper deep fried cauliflower, and a vegan breakfast alongside an avocado mushroom bagel. Ordering runs through a QR code at the table, and a craft ale board sits alongside Shindigger and Schoffenhofer beers. The outdoor seating area has infrared heating lamps, making it usable across the year, and dogs are welcome there. High chairs are available for families with young children, and the step-free entrance suits visitors with mobility needs. The space opens daily, and reservations are recommended. Beyond regular service, the venue hosts open mic nights and is available for private functions with buffet catering, giving groups a setting for events beyond a standard meal out.

Customer Review Summary

Diners repeatedly return for the food beyond a typical pub menu, with the aubergine burger singled out for staying crispy rather than turning mushy, alongside the salt and pepper deep fried cauliflower, houmous with bread, and a vegan breakfast praised for generous portions. The Peposo, a Tuscan red wine beef stew, and chicken chasseur draw particular praise from a lunch outing, while a private function noted a well received buffet. Several reviews mention a warm, welcoming atmosphere and note the open mic night and a private birthday function as standout experiences. Service is inconsistent across reviews: some describe staff as lovely and friendly, but others report being ignored or spoken to dismissively, with one reviewer waiting to be acknowledged at the bar and another describing rushed, indifferent service outside involving a malfunctioning QR ordering system. One reviewer separately notes a warm glass of Chardonnay and staff not rotating fridge stock. One function organiser recalls staff going out of their way to keep the night running smoothly from start to finish.

“We recently hired Mary and Archie's in Chorlton for a private function, my wife's birthday party. we had an animation fancy dress theme, and I have to say the whole experience was fab from start to finish. Jonny helped make sure everything was ship shape prior to the event. We ordered a buffet from m&a which a lot of our guests complimented, (Twas tasty, and generous) & Amber and Laura, the two staff who were on shift for the night were both amazing. Thank you for getting involved! 😄 Highly recommended if you want an awesome location to hold a function. Pricing was very competitive compared with other venues we looked at, and they bent over backwards to ensure the night went off without a hitch. Great work all round. Thanks again for a wonderful evening!”

“Extremely rude members of staff - completely indifferent to customers. They acted as if the customers were an irritation and an interruption of their own conversations. The girl was at the bar doing nothing in particular - we waited for her to ask us she wanted but in the end we had to ask her if she was actually serving people. It's a shame as the bar has a good atmosphere. But at the very least you need to feel as if you are welcome in a place, rather than an irritant.”

“Tuesday. Drinking a small, warm Chardonnay (£6) whilst watching a member of staff placing bottles of beer in the fridge without rotating the stock, so they'll be warm too. Poorly trained or poorly motivated staff? Could be both.”
  • Timothy Peace
“I went here for the open mic night. I really enjoyed it I was one of the artists I played harmonica. Everybody joined in and it was a fantastic night. People so warm and friendly.”
