Quick info
About The Chip Shop
The Chip Shop is a fish & chips restaurant in Manchester, just outside Piccadilly station, at Gateway House. Chips are fried on the spot and cooked continually rather than held. The menu centres on fish and chips served with vinegar, and potato scallops appear alongside. Gravy and curry sauce are offered as tasters, so customers can sample a sauce before choosing one. Orders are wrapped in old-school paper. The restaurant is walk-in only. Scraps are available as an extra for anyone who wants them.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers keep returning to the gravy, with diners calling it just as they remember it from childhood and offering a taster of it alongside the curry sauce. Close behind are the freshly fried chips and fish, cooked continually, in generous portions even on the mini size. Potato scallops get repeated praise, one calling them thicker than usual and good with vinegar, and the chicken mushroom pie and scraps also earn mentions. The owner and staff come up often as smiley, chatty and full of banter, and one visitor from Norway says their child wanted to go back twice a day. The main complaint is heat: one reviewer says it is insanely hot inside with the fryer constantly running, and another notes the indoors may smell of deep fry, though the open door helps. Several mention the old school paper wrapping, and one reviewer was handed a little cup of curry sauce to try that reminded them of Japan.

“Delightful. In the past, I had travelled to a seaside town thinking it would have the freshest fish, but this place was way more fresh and delicious. Was offered a taster of the gravy and curry sauce... Gravy gave the meal that extra delish edge. Scraps added a nice crunch. Thick potato scallop was thicker than what I'm used to, but it combined with the vinegar was so good I ate it before taking the photo. Food was wrapped in old school paper, gave me nostalgic feel-good vibes. Awesome customer service - Abz is a bit of a legend.”

“It was a lovely experience to try fish and chips, the staff was very kind and helpful! However I would like to suggest adding AC inside, it's insanely hot with the frying machine constantly working and I cannot imagine how uncomfortable it must be for the workers in there. They deserve to work in a normal temperature and not in such a hot environment!!”

“I live in Leeds and my son lives in Manchester. I have heard him going on and on how FANTASTIC this chip shop is, so on a visit yesterday that’s where we were going for tea, and HONESTLY I was NOT disappointed, it was everything he said it was. The food is being cooked fresh continually and the man how owns it is lovely. He’s very smiley, has banter and chats with every customer. He deserves to do well. I 100% recommend with confidence - GO AND TRY!!! you will not be disappointed”

“One thing that I LOVED about this place was that they fry the chips on the spot. I had the time to wait, so when I got the food it was warm and freshly fried. The list keeps going on, but I’d like to highlight: - the external area, as the indoors may smell like deep fry (although, they keep the door open which helps with the smell) - the generous amount of chips even on the Mini version - the chicken mushroom pie was 😋 chef’s kiss. - the packaging for take away my left overs - the lady who packed also gave me a little cup with some curry sauce to try, and let me tell you what. As someone who grew up in Japan, this curry took me back there. If I had a bowl of rice I would’ve been the happiest person right there. - the staff was also really kind I’m 100% going back to the Chip Shop next time I stop at Manchester, and it’s just outside Piccadily station so it’s very handy. Worth every pound spent 🫶🏻”
