Quick info
About Chakalaka
Chakalaka is a South African restaurant on Oldham St in Manchester, at number 105a, with a menu built around Cape Malay curry, boerewors and the Chakabab. Other meat dishes and a halloumi smash burger share the menu, and biltong and ribs appear as well. The drinks list covers cocktails and milkshakes, with cocktails on a happy hour before 6pm. Mains are half price at the start of the week, which gives diners a lower-cost way to work through the food. Dogs are welcome, so guests can bring their pets along.

Customer Review Summary
The recurring complaint is the room. One reviewer found the tiny space overwhelming, with close, wobbly tables, and had trouble hearing friends. Another says the music was so loud the waiter couldn't hear the order, so they pointed at the menu. The same first reviewer waited a while for water and napkins after a beer spilled on a friend's coat, and found the only toilet out of order. One diner who came on a quiet Sunday took leftover ribs home in a doggy bag.

“Great food and atmosphere. We had the halloumi smash burger which we very nice, would definitely order that again. And the Chakabab which is huge, and very nice. We got in there pre 6pm so had cocktails on the happy hour too! Staff were all lovely and very helpful when ordering. Would recommend a visit.”

“Little taste of home 🩷 such classic South African drinks and dishes on the menu that really reminded me of growing up in Cape Town! The lamb chops and boerewors were really tasty and the service was quick, great deals on there as well!”

“It was a quiet night being a Sunday, but the food was delicious and the service impeccable. Couldn't finish the ribs, but took a "doggy bag" home. Will definitely be going back.”

“Great food, decent price. Music was so loud that the waiter couldn't hear me so I pointed at the menu. Turning it down would improve the atmosphere massively.”

“I had the opportunity to visit Chakalaka with a South African friend. We were wishing for food that reminded us of home . Chakala gave us a feel of being home, decor was on point, food was on point and we met another South African couple which just made our day just a little more authentic 😊😍”
