Quick info
About Sweet Mandarin
Sweet Mandarin is a family-run Chinese restaurant at 19 Copperas St in Manchester's Northern Quarter. The kitchen cooks its gluten-free menu separately from other food to avoid cross-contamination, so coeliac and gluten-intolerant guests can order from a menu prepared with them in mind. A vegan menu has its own dedicated fryer, which keeps plant-based dishes apart from the rest of the cooking. The restaurant is independent. Tables are reserved by email, and calls to the restaurant are not answered. Guests pay before they eat, either in cash or through the app.

Customer Review Summary
Diners with coeliac disease or gluten intolerance come for a menu that is gluten free almost throughout, with duck pancakes the one noted exception, and many say the food tastes just like standard Chinese cooking. Salt and pepper chips and salt and pepper chicken balls with sweet and sour sauce come up most, followed by vegetable spring rolls, prawn on toast, lemon chicken, noodles and crispy Sichuan beef. Several describe the relief of sharing communal dishes and eating without anxiety, and one diner with a shellfish allergy says staff asked about food cooked in shared oil. Reviewers call the staff friendly, attentive and polite, and describe food arriving quickly and piping hot. Criticism is mild. One reviewer says the taste will not set the world alight, though it was good quality and satisfying, and notes noodles that are shorter or stickier than usual. The potatoes are called very good but a little too salty. Another had a small problem with a starter that staff resolved well beyond what was needed. Two parties celebrating a birthday and an anniversary were given a card, with a gift for one and a photo frame for the other.

“Beautiful food and treated like royalty. It was our anniversary and they came out with a card and photo frame! I’m gluten intolerant so highly recommend this restaurant - gluten free prawn on toast and vegetable spring rolls are incredible”

“The food and service here was excellent. We had the smallest issue with our starter, nothing that stopped us eating it! Told them when they collected plates and they dealt with it way above and beyond what was needed. Fabulous service and the food was amazing. As a coeliac now living in Aus and back in the uk visiting family and friends, I had been craving a Chinese like this for so long and it did not disappoint! Well worth the visit)”

“One of the best meals I have had. Came for my birthday, Staff were so lovely and attentive. I was given a birthday card and a gift, with so much thought put into it! Food is incredible, my friend even got to have her first Chinese ever with everything being gluten free and safe to eat! 100% would recommend to everyone, coeliac or not as we could not fault a single thing here! Thank you to all the staff for helping make my birthday special! We will be back!”

“Always on the look out for gluten free places to eat, especially ones that offer food that is usually heavy on the gluten. The restaurant was quiet when we went, and the waiters were very polite and friendly. The menus look a little old and battered, but I think that gave them a certain charm, prices are reasonable and the portions are plentiful! The actual taste of the food is not going to set the world alight but it was good quality, hot and satisfying. The main reason I'd recommend this place is for gluten free people who miss Asian cuisine and especially for people who love to share food. This was the first restaurant I'd been to in a long time where we could share communal dishes because everything (bar a small caveat of the duck pancackes) is gluten free by default! And honestly if you're worried that lack of gluten let's the dish down, don't be. At most you might notice the noodles are shorter or a little stickier than usual but that's about it. Highly recommend this spot for a nice casual sit down experience - and the "best ever potatoes" on the menu really are very very good if a little too salty as their only drawback.”

“As a person with a coeliac disease couldn’t be any happier and more impressed with this place. The food was stunning, could not have guessed it was gluten free at all. The staff were so lovely and polite. Great prices and the atmosphere was quiet with soft music playing in the background. Would recommend to everyone especially people with a coeliac disease or gluten intolerance/sensitivity. P.S the whole menu is gluten free!! Overall 100/10 rating from me, will definitely be returning!”
