About Red Restaurant
Red Restaurant is a Chinese restaurant at 103 Portland St in Manchester, built around hot pot and BBQ. At the barbecue, staff help with the cooking at the table, so guests do not have to manage the grill alone. The hot pot sits alongside a separate "no hotpot" selection for anyone who wants a regular plated meal. The menu also draws on Sichuan and Cantonese cooking, with Yu Xiang shredded pork, Chinese Sausages Pot Rice and salt and pepper chicken wings among the choices. Crispy fried chicken, seafood and soup dishes fill out the rest of the list. The dining room is spacious and can seat groups of 10 to 15.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often praise the authentic Chinese cooking, with Sichuan and Cantonese dishes made to order and the spice adjusted on request. The Yu Xiang shredded pork is called especially authentic and full of flavour, while others describe slow cooked meat in rich, tender sauces and flash fried items that arrive crisp and juicy. Close behind are salt and pepper chicken wings, salt and pepper squid, crispy fried chicken, seafood, and a Chinese Sausages Pot Rice called flavorful and perfectly cooked. Hotpot regulars say it is among the most authentic in town, and one group who did the bbq found everything delicious. Staff are repeatedly called friendly and helpful, guiding diners through the massive menu and tailoring suggestions. The room is described as quiet on weekday afternoons, busier later, and spacious enough for large groups. The one caveat is cost: one reviewer calls most dishes pricey next to a typical takeaway, though others find the bill reasonable. One diner who could not find the pepper beef hotplate on the menu was served exactly that after asking.

“The food here is amazing and I will definitely be going again. The staff are so helpful and kind. The service was amazing. I highly recommend. Nice and quiet atmosphere in the afternoon but it gets more busy later in the day. The food in the pictures are: salt and pepper chicken wings, salt and pepper squid, egg fried rice, a beef dish, and a duck dish.”

“When the bill arrived I did a total double-take. What! They must have missed items, it has to be more than that. If what you want is actual Chinese food, prepared to order (not just loads of soy sauce and MSG) with the spicyness you request, then this is for you. Staff guide you through the menu, made suggestions, they were so helpful. When the food came it was so good, the slow cooked meat was in tender and in rich sauces, the flash fried items were crisp and juicy, what's not to love. No pressure to eat and go, very easy going. Very nice clean toilets, not always the case... All at a very reasonable price.”

“We asked for recommendations and I couldn't be happier! The lady who served us was lovely and her suggestions were delicious and tailored to our liking. We had a lovely chat and were given recommendations for our trip in Manchester. If you want a clean, home feeling and vibey restaurant with proper Chinese food I definitely recommend this place! Will definitely come again whenever I'm in Manchester again.”

“Love Red Restaurant! We used to come here specifically for the hotpot, as one of my best friends from Sichuan, China (the hometown of Hotpot), always said they do the most authentic in town. This time, we tried their 'no hotpot' selection, and it is truly one of the best, most authentic Chinese dining experiences in Manchester. The food is fresh, high quality and the staff are incredibly friendly.Highly recommend trying their crispy fried chicken, seafood, and soup dishes! 😋”
