About Gooey Cafe NQ

At 103 High St, Gooey Cafe NQ is a bakery-style cafe in Manchester that bakes its cookies and donuts in-house every day, and opens daily. Warm cookie samples go out to the queue, with milk chocolate and white chocolate among the cookie flavours. The kitchen also turns out brunch plates, including a French toast version with cherry brownie. Bags of flour and sugar sit on display, and the baking happens where customers can watch it. Seating includes metal bar seats, and orders can be placed through an app. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary

French toast is what reviewers praise most, described as thick cut, golden and crisp outside with a soft, custard-like centre, and a huge portion for sharing. The cherry brownie version is called rich and playful, with the cherry cutting through the sweetness. Close behind are the baked goods, including a white chocolate cookie with generous filling, a cinnamon bun, and exceptional doughnuts. The egg sandwich, katsu chicken sandwich and Classic Ruben also earn praise. Coffee draws mixed reactions, with one reviewer calling it outstanding and another finding it lukewarm. Waiting is the recurring complaint. Several describe queuing outside before getting a seat, and some say the food then took a long time to arrive. Others found the egg sandwich cold, the hash browns greasy or fried on only one side, and the avocado toast dry or too busy in flavour. One reviewer reports feeling unwell after the sandwiches. Staff are mostly called friendly, and a couple of reviewers mention being handed warm cookie samples while they waited.

“This has become a go to spot…been here several times. The place is super inviting with friendly staff and lovely aroma of the bread being baked ! The Classic Ruben sandwich + Egg Sandwich are my fav, it’s worth the price! Very filling so, I’d come hungry or perfect to share with someone :) Fresh toast is a must try. The coffee happens to also be outstanding.”

“Visited on a rainy morning and didn’t need to wait to be seated, which was a nice start. You order through the app, but it took a while for the coffee to arrive, and when it did it was lukewarm seems to be a bit of a theme with coffee in Manchester. The doughnuts were exceptional and honestly worth going back for on their own. We also had the egg sandwiches and shared the hash browns, but the hash browns were only fried on one side, and unfortunately the sandwiches left us both feeling unwell afterwards. Also be prepared to wait everything takes ages. Staff were friendly and the place looks nice, I don’t usually seek out viral spots but happened to be walking past. It’s fine, but between the lukewarm coffee and the food issues, I wouldn’t rush back.”

“Cinnamon Bun - £3.95 Americano, No Milk - £3.50 This place is legit. The cinnamon bun is off the charts. They bake their goods in-house. You can watch them make stuff. Legit wish they did pour overs for coffee, but I'm accepting the fact that espressos are the norm here in the UK. At first, the staff seem pretty cold, but that first impression wore off once I sat and ordered. Great stuff. A friend recommended coming here before leaving Manchester, and I'm glad I did. Highly (doubly highly) recommend.”

“Absolutely lovely food the katsu curry sandwjtch and the vanilla capachino are amazing and the desserts looked lovely. Staff were very friendly and service was quick. The place looked gave off homemade woth all the bags of flour and sugar all on display. Unfortunately my skinny bum started to hurt after a while due to the seats being metal bars and the bathroom didn't have any hand soap but this would not stop me from coming back. Lovely place.”

“I had the absolute pleasure of visiting Gooey 103 High Street today for the first time & will most definitely be back (plus I'm going to treat my sons as I know they will love it too!). When I got there just before 12 noon there was a queue...which to be fair is always a positive sign. We were looked after brilliantly by the lovely Nathan, such a bubbly young lad who treated us to samples of warm cookies while we waited. As I was on my own Nathan got me a lovely seat, explained everything to me & nothing was too much trouble. I had the egg sandwich which was divine. I probably waited 15 minutes or so for my food but did not mind as everything is so frsh. Loved that tap water was also available. Overall I enjoyed every minute thanks to Nathan. The best front of house guy ever!! Thank you so much ❤️”
