About Ezra & Gil

Ezra & Gil is a breakfast and brunch cafe at 20 Hilton St in Manchester. Its name combines the words for "Helper" and "Happiness". The breakfast and brunch menu runs all day and includes halal, veggie and gluten free options. The Reuben puts poached eggs, pastrami, hollandaise, tomatoes and pickles on bread, and the Nduja scrambled eggs are a regular order. A French Toast of the Day rotates through the menu, with Apple Crumble among the versions. Coffee and matcha lead the drinks. The cafe takes no reservations, and the queue moves quickly. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often return to the brunch plates, with the nduja scrambled eggs singled out repeatedly as delicious with a bit of spice. Close behind are the Reuben with poached eggs, pastrami and hollandaise, the apple crumble French toast of the day, and pancakes with strawberries, blueberries and mascarpone. Vegetarian diners praise the variety, and several call the portions generous. Coffee gets mixed notes: some find it great, while one found it too acidic and fruity for a preference for darker roasts. Staff are described as friendly and welcoming, and the queue is usually said to move quickly, though one reviewer felt the wait for food and service was longer. The most detailed complaint comes from a diner who found the breakfast tacos served in a bowl, so the wraps stuck to the paper and each other, and thought four pieces of halloumi was steep for the price. Others mention a loud room, and one found it hotter inside than outside in June. One party was moved straight away when their table was too exposed to the sun.

“Bustling with people and noisy place. It might be a common thing having b'fast in this region but I prefer a little less noise and low volume talks. In other sense, it is vibrant , filled with people and low lighting gives an evening kind a feel in morning. The food served here is fantastic and coffee smells are pretty aromatic. I order fried eggs and beans on toast for my duaghter. Eggs served were fantastic and sourdough bread is fresh and great at taste. Fast service and highly alert staff.”

“Delicious, clean and tasty breakfast. My wife went old school with poached eggs on sourdough and OJ. I went a little more off-piste with nduja scrambled eggs and affogato espresso. Friendly staff, relaxing atmosphere, a little bit of a wait for food and service, but totally worth it. Will definitely come back on our next country gig trip to Manchester.”

“Came for brunch and had an amazing time. Coffee was great, brunch range was brilliant and portions were spot on. Staff were really helpful and friendly. The atmosphere was very relaxed and chilled.”

“Food and service really good, interior design is also awesome. Very hipster and ideal for brunch. However, in June it was extremely hot inside (hotter than outside) and the music and guests were very loud. I do not recommend for work.”
  • Oliver Telfor
“Yeah, it's ok. The coffee is good but they need to work on how things are served. The breakfast tacos come in a bowl rather than on a taco rack, so the wraps stick to the paper and to each other. They're also not really taco shells, more of a breakfast mini open wrap. Portion sizes are decent, but £5 for four pieces of halloumi is a bit steep. Wouldn't rush back, it's not the worst, but there are a lot better places in Manchester and doesn't justify the queue.”
