About Queens Arms

Queens Arms is a pub in Manchester at 120 Green Ln, built in 1828 and the oldest railway pub in the world. The Grade II listed building now also houses a Japanese restaurant, so the pub's rooms serve as a setting for Japanese cooking as well as drinks. The menu includes a tempura selection, with soft shell crab tempura among the options, and teriyaki beef tongue for those after something less usual. Udon dishes and rice bowls cover the heartier end of the list. Sapporo is on draught to go with the food. The pub sits just off the road near Patricroft station, on the Manchester to Liverpool train line.

Customer Review Summary

Japanese food in a traditional railway pub is what reviewers come for, and the eel rice bowl leads, with soft shell crab, ox tongue, chicken wings and crispy pork chop close behind. Tempura platters, salt and pepper squid, udon in tsuyu broth and a scrambled egg and pork rice bowl also draw praise, and several describe the portions as generous. Staff are called friendly, attentive and quick, and one table notes that drink suggestions matched their tastes. Reviewers describe a vintage, olde worlde bar with a relaxed feel, and one mentions a nice outside area. The criticism is small and specific. One reviewer found the fried pork chop a little fatty and the beef tongue a little chewy and not juicy, though another calls the tongue surprisingly tender. One suggests checking the location before setting off, since the pub sits just off the road. Drinkers mention the Black Sheep beer, and one notes it is the only pub serving Sapporo on draught.

“We had dinner at Queens Arms and were pleasantly surprised to find a Japanese restaurant inside this beautiful old Victorian pub. The place feels cosy and relaxed, with a really welcoming atmosphere. The staff were genuinely friendly and attentive. They recommended drinks based on what we like, and their suggestions were spot on without feeling pushy. We ordered quite a few dishes to share, and everything tasted fresh and well‑prepared. Some dishes stood out more for us: Salt & Pepper Squid — Super tender and lightly crispy. The coating wasn’t heavy, and the seasoning had a nice balance without being too salty. Salt & Pepper Chicken Wings — Crunchy outside and juicy inside. The pieces were plump and not oily, which we really enjoyed. Teriyaki Beef Tongue — Surprisingly tender with a clean flavour. It’s not something you see everywhere, so it felt like a nice treat. Soft‑Shell Crab — Big portion, very crispy, and the inside stayed soft and sweet. Even the legs had meat, which was a nice bonus. Tempura Selection — Light batter, not greasy, and you can tell it was fried to order. Unagi Don — Generous piece of eel, soft and rich without being overly sweet. Paired really well with the rice. Angus Steak Don — The steak was cooked just right, tender with a good amount of flavour. The soft boiled egg on top tied everything together. Yaki Udon — Chewy Sanuki udon with a savoury sauce that coated the noodles nicely. Dessert (Green Tea & Mango Mochi) — Soft, chewy, and a lovely way to end the meal. Overall, we had a great evening — tasty food, lovely service, and a unique setting. It’s definitely a place we’d happily come back to.”

We had the chicken wings, eel rice bowl, Udon and wagyu burger with egg, curry and rice. Everything was delicious and the portion sizes were generous. Lovely attentive staff and quick service.
