About The Ship & Shovell
The Ship & Shovell is a pub and restaurant in Charing Cross, London, split into two buildings on opposite sides of Craven Passage. A tunnel joins the halves and holds both the kitchen and the cellar. The sides are called the Ship and the Shovell, and each has its own bar. The interior follows a Victorian style, with dark wood paneling, booths and a classic snug. An upstairs crows nest looks across to the opposite frontage, and history is displayed on the walls. The food includes fish and chips and steak pie and mash, served alongside Badger beers and a range of other beers on tap. The pub sits near Embankment, Charing Cross Station and Trafalgar Square.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often single out the pub's split layout, with one building on each side of Craven Passage joined by an underground tunnel, and many mention the "Ship" and "Shovell" sides, each with its own bar. Close behind is the beer, with repeated praise for the range on tap, including Badger beers, a hand drawn golden beer and a crisp lager. The interior draws comments for its dark wood, oak panelling, booths, a classic snug and an upstairs "crows nest" overlooking the opposite frontage. Several describe the staff and bartenders as friendly and welcoming. Food gets less attention because a few visited outside meal hours, but one diner called the fish and chips the best of an 18 day trip, and their husband enjoyed the steak pie and mash. Another reviewer found the food fresh and good value. No recurring complaint appears in the reviews. Several mention the history on the walls, and one reviewer describes the pub as a quiet step back in time from the bustle around Trafalgar Square.

“Popped in for a quick drink after stumbling on Theo’s diamond of a pub, atmosphere was great and we loved all the history on the walls. Definitely a great pub to visit and it’s split into two parts which is quaint, both sides have bars so no need to go from one to the other unless you choose too.”

“Great pub near to Charing Cross Station. Famously split across two sides of the street. Good range of beers. Recommended.”

“One of the 10 best pubs I’ve visited in England this time around. It’s typical in the sense that it is well preserved, boasts a warm and welcoming interior (including a classic snug), and offers a quiet and respectful atmosphere. I visited after lunch, so can’t say what it’s like at other times. What makes it unique is that the pub sits on both sides of an alleyway! If you sit upstairs in the “crows nest,” it’s a great view of the opposite frontage. If you’re looking for an out-of-the-way pub to escape the hub-bub of Leicester Square and the Strand, look no further!”

“18 days in the UK and this was hands down the best fish and chips I had all trip. My husband love his meal as well- the steak pie and mash. Bartenders were super friendly. And there are two buildings, but the same restaurant- intetestung history if you have a few minutes to research. We really liked this place- you could come for dinner, or come for just drinks.”

“A traditional and charming London local pub and restaurant in Charing Cross. The Ship & Shovell is the only London pub in two halves, situated on either side of Craven Passage linked only by a tunnel which also contains the kitchen and cellar. Simply oozing with character and charm, the pub serves as the perfect traditional local for business guests and residents alike, as well as tourists frequenting the Charing Cross area.”
