About Monohon Ramen

Monohon Ramen is a ramen restaurant at 102 Old St in London, with a menu built around tonkotsu ramen and Abura Soba, brothless noodles that also come in a veggie version. A vegan Tan Tan ramen sits alongside them for plant-based diners. Guests choose their spice level and noodle firmness and can add extra toppings such as egg and chashu. The restaurant is small, with compact tables and room for bags on the floor, and the bar seating lets diners watch the noodles being cooked. Tables cannot be booked. Guests wait at the door, and a line outside is common. The drinks list covers Japanese drinks and teas, with only a limited choice of fizzy drinks.

Customer Review Summary

Tonkotsu is the bowl reviewers return to most, with the shoyu tonkotsu and the Big Boy spicy tonkotsu praised for a rich broth, deep flavour and fresh noodles. Close behind are the brothless options: the abura soba, the Taiwan Maze Soba with extra chashu, and silky soup-less noodles that one diner rated above their experience in central London. The vegan Tan Tan ramen and the Mentaiko Cream Ramen also draw mentions. Staff are repeatedly described as friendly and quick, and several diners were seated promptly on weekday lunchtimes and afternoons, though others mention a line outside at busier times. The space is small, groups may struggle to sit together, and bags have to go on the floor. Other complaints are specific: one reviewer found the bowl pricey, another would have preferred bamboo to beansprouts, and the egg costs extra rather than coming with the bowl. Diners also point out that they can choose the spice level and how al dente the noodles are.

“Rob was an excellent waiter he recommended my dish and knew what I would like! Keshav made the most lovely ramen! He was very knowledgeable and bought me some additions as it was my first visit! 🍜 I really enjoyed my dish. The best ramen I’ve tasted! The queues are worth it although I went on a Wednesday afternoon and there was no queuing! Service was fast and welcoming. Very clean and authentic taste of Japan! The food came quickly. Very fresh, tasty and generous portions! A must try!”

“This is a gem sitting in a row of shops, you have to look carefully to find it and when you find the experience is worth your effort. We were a party of 4, although seated on two separate tables, but close enough to communicate. The staff were friendly, attentive and helpful. The food was really good, the brothless noodles were silky and delicious 😋 🤤. I left there knowing I didn't just eat any odd thing, but good quality, fresh food. We all rated it very highly, the prices were reasonable for such places. Having had Japanese food several times, this is way better than my experience in central London. They have a variety of Japanese drinks/ teas, with very limited fizzy, just ask for recommendations from the staff and the teas are actually very refreshing. The presentation of the food is very inviting and so was the flavour, ok I am going on too much about the food must show that I intend going back 😁”

“Personally I like the raman with soup more than abura soba. The broth so rich in flavour and very delicious! Just need to be aware that the restaurant and table is small. You can only put your bags/ belongings on the floor.”

“Absolutely delicious food and easily one of the best ramen spots I’ve visited. The vegan Tan Tan ramen is a must-try for anyone who enjoys this style of ramen. It’s rich, flavorful, and incredibly satisfying. Adding an egg takes it to another level and makes an already fantastic bowl even better. The noodles themselves are excellent, perfectly cooked and full of texture. The service was just as impressive as the food. The staff were genuinely friendly, welcoming, calm, and always happy to help, creating a very relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere. Overall, one of the best ramen experiences I’ve had. Great food, great service, and definitely a place I’ll be returning to.”
