About Eat Tokyo (Soho)
Eat Tokyo (Soho) is a small Japanese restaurant at 16 Old Compton St in London. The large menu spans sushi, bento boxes, eel dishes and sharing platters, so a group can mix formats in a single order. Bento options include an eel bento, and the sushi rolls include a two way salmon roll. Unagi donburi sits among the eel dishes, and a lunch special sushi set is also offered, with green tea to go alongside. The restaurant usually has a queue outside, and reservations can be made by phone. A second branch operates in Covent Garden.

Customer Review Summary
The criticism is real and specific. One diner found the sushi bento served warm, the fried chicken tasting of stale oil, and the Wagyu sushi dominated by spring onion. Another had a tonkatsu whose coating fell off and sushi that seemed low quality. A third called the sashimi acceptable but not fresh and described a waitress who never smiled. Queues are a recurring note, with one reviewer describing a line outside while many seats sat empty, and another suggesting the Covent Garden branch as a quieter alternative.

“A very good restaurant. Some truly unique meat dishes—the kind I’ve never tasted anywhere else in the world. Fresh, flavorful fish. Kind and friendly staff.”

“One of the best unagi donburi I’ve had since moving to the UK. The eel was perfectly grilled—soft, tender, and full of flavour, with a delicious glaze that wasn’t overly sweet. The portion was generous, and everything in the bento was fresh, especially the sushi and tamagoyaki. The salad also tasted fresh and balanced the meal nicely. I’ve tried quite a few Japanese restaurants in the UK, but it’s been a long time since I’ve had unagi this good. It really reminded me of the quality I used to have before coming to the UK. The staff were friendly, the food arrived quickly, and the prices were very reasonable for the quality. I’ll definitely be coming back whenever I’m craving unagi. Highly recommended! 🍱👍”

“I have visited Eat Tokyo before at other branches and had good experiences, which is why I decided to return. Unfortunately, this visit was extremely disappointing. First of all, I had booked a table for four people, but we were given a very large table at the very back of the restaurant. The table next to us was also unusually large, making the area feel cramped and awkward. There was really no need for such oversized tables, as they could not accommodate additional customers and simply made dining uncomfortable. We ordered eight different dishes, and sadly most of them were far below the standard I expected from Eat Tokyo. The sushi bento was disappointing. The sushi was served noticeably warm, which affected both the texture and overall taste. Sushi should be fresh and properly chilled, so receiving warm sushi was quite unpleasant. The fried items were even worse. They had a strong stale oil flavour, suggesting the frying oil was old or overdue for changing. Some pieces were also overcooked and burnt. I am generally not someone who leaves food unfinished and will usually make an effort to finish my meal, but the fried chicken was so unpleasant that I simply could not finish it. Honestly, it was one of the worst fried chicken dishes I have had in the UK. The Wagyu sushi looked impressive, but unfortunately the spring onion completely overpowered the flavour of the beef. All I could really taste was spring onion rather than Wagyu. Overall, this was a very disappointing meal. The presentation looked good in the photos, but the quality and flavour did not match the appearance. As someone who has enjoyed Eat Tokyo at other branches before, this experience was particularly frustrating. I sincerely hope this is an issue specific to this branch rather than a reflection of the Eat Tokyo brand as a whole, because my previous visits elsewhere were much better.”

“The New menu is hyping me up! Also visited this resto many times and weekday lunch is surely the best time to visit for their weekday lunch special sushi set! Green tea is another classic. My wife enjoyed the sushi selection she picked and the okonomiyaki. The orka was good also but sadly two pieces were very chewy but its still good in general. Keep it up Eat Tokyo!”

“Good value for money with large portions and plenty of menu choices. The sashimi was acceptable but not particularly fresh, and the quality was fairly average. One thing that stood out was the service. The waitress did not smile throughout the entire meal and the service lacked the warmth and attentiveness that many people associate with Japanese hospitality. If you’re expecting the level of service often found in authentic Japanese restaurants, you may be disappointed. Overall, it’s a decent place for a filling and affordable Japanese meal, but not the place to go for high-quality sashimi or a traditional Japanese dining experience.”
