Quick info
About manteca
manteca is an Italian restaurant at 49-51 Curtain Rd in London, built around nose-to-tail cooking from an open kitchen. The menu changes daily, the pastas are rolled by hand, and the cuts are cooked over fire and served to share. Pasta dishes include brown crab cacio e pepe and venison ragù with mafaldine, and focaccia comes as a starter with house-made ricotta. Counter and bar seating faces the chefs, a separate dining room sits alongside, and extra seating fills the basement. Reservations are required.

Customer Review Summary
Mussels in a nduja cream sauce are the dish diners raise most, with several singling out the sauce and flavour and dipping focaccia into it. Pasta comes close behind, including the venison ragu, the crab cacio e pepe and the vodka pasta, and one reviewer prefers the pasta to the meat mains, which another found tender but short on flavour. Focaccia and house ricotta win praise from several, though one found the focaccia soggy with oil and another called the ricotta nothing to write home about. A few note that dishes run salty. The date and plum cake with ginger ice cream gets a mention for dessert. Service is the recurring complaint. Reviewers describe being pushed to order while still eating starters, wine that was never topped up or arrived very late, and mains that dragged in a large room. One table saw a main course reach the table after everyone else had finished eating.

“Came for lunch alone sat by the bar. Always loved watching food being made and at Manteca during lunch it was hectic for the chefs to say the least. My server was attentive and the brown crab cacio e Pepe was cooked to perfection. The atmosphere was lively + the space well designed.”

“Best dinner I have had in london, please take the nduja mussels, ricotta and bread to die for. Also Valentin was the most respectful and friendly server. Such an amazing night highly reccomend and book a table at the dining room, the vibes were so good as well as romantic. Thank you for the great evening and food!”

“The pasta dishes, especially the sauces, are amazing. They are unique and interesting but still comforting. I also really reccomend the kale salad. The foccacia and the ricotta, although it looks cool, is nothing to write home about. I would also say to rather get pasta dishes than the meats. Very nice atmosphere. Also definitely get desert! The date and plum cake (which is bascially a STP) with ginger ice cream is absolutely amazing.”

“Manteca was superb. I loved everything about it, from the atmosphere and service to the incredible food. Every dish delivered, from the first to the last. The focaccia and ricotta were unreal. The salads were fresh, humble, beautifully balanced and full of flavour. The pastas were amazing — the kind that make you want to lick the plate clean. Both mains were excellent. The duck was cooked really well and the goat was cooked perfectly. The garnishes were simple but made complete sense with the proteins, and the sauces were so good I ended up ordering extra focaccia just to dip into them. The gelato was delicious, and the dessert was fresh, refreshing and not too heavy — a perfect way to finish the meal. Great cooking, great balance and a restaurant that knows exactly what it wants to be. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Well done to the whole team — I’ll definitely be back.”

“We visited Manteca recently and came away with fairly mixed feelings. The restaurant itself is undeniably attractive – the open kitchen and counter seating create a lively atmosphere, and there was a real buzz about the place throughout the evening. It’s the sort of restaurant that immediately feels like somewhere you want to spend a couple of hours. The food, however, didn’t quite live up to the expectation or the price point. We tried several pasta dishes, including the beef ragù, and while everything was perfectly enjoyable and clearly well made, nothing really stood out as particularly memorable. The beef ragù, for example, was tasty and comforting, but not something I’d rush back for or consider especially good value given the cost. Unfortunately, the service was where the evening started to unravel. Our waiter himself was friendly and attentive, but there were some significant issues with the overall service. Despite having a reservation, we were left waiting around 15 minutes before being seated. We also ordered wine which didn’t arrive for over half an hour, despite us asking about it several times. The biggest frustration came when one person’s main course simply didn’t arrive with the rest of the table’s food. We were assured it would be “very soon”, but it eventually appeared around 15 minutes later, by which point most of us had already finished eating. It was disappointing and put a bit of a dampener on the meal. Overall, Manteca has a great atmosphere and serves good food, but based on our experience, the prices set expectations that the food and service didn’t quite manage to meet. I’m glad we tried it, but I’m not sure we’d be rushing back.”
